...an hour seems a little low for an RN with 2 years of experience, doesn't it?

I was a Peds RN for 2 years, it didn't work out and now I'm starting a new position in ortho neuro adults. Making less than before! Doesn't make sense to me. Doesn't $22.78 sound too low for an experienced RN in South Florida? This offer is at an HCA facility.

I was also offered a positon at a Level 1 trauma hospital in Peds at $24.90 an hour which sounds reasonable to me. But the problem there is that it is Monday thru Friday!

I don't know I just feel like I'm being jipped at $22.78??? Any thoughts?

It sounds about right to me. Was only 10 years ago a new r.n. I knew started at 16.50 in the ICU.

Specializes in Ortho, Neuro, Detox, Tele.

well, i make 24.05 a hour but the 5 dollar shift diff helps. IL

Specializes in COS-C, Risk Management.

I'm also in FL, but a little north of you. Cost of living is not a factor for HCA hospitals, in the least. "But you get paid in sunshine" doesn't help pay the rent. You basically have two options, let the recruiter know that you are disappointed with the wage offered and while you would like to work there, you cannot afford to do so at the rate you were quoted. Suggest that you would be able to go as low as $24.50/hr (or whatever your cutoff is), but know that there are plenty of other nurses who will jump at the chance to have a job and you may just talk yourself out of the position--and the employer knows this. Your other option is to say thank you and accept the position, consider working overtime or moonlighting to pad your bank account.

Specializes in School Nurse, Maternal Newborn.

HCA/Columbia doesn't make a lot of profit by paying really well. (Been there, done that!) However, neither of the positions you are considering sound great, to me. One is stressful and backbreaking, the other is a heartbreaking, high stress pressure cooker. Are they both daytime positions? Many base rates are quoted, but shift differentials bump it up, so just wondering.

If these are your only available options, I'd consider the stress levels, not the money. You'll burn out, otherwise. (just my :twocents:)

Yes, these are my options. The ortho neuro position pays 22.78 is from 7a-7p. Not including shift differential. The Peds position is M-F 4p-11p with no weekends at 24.90 base pay with an additional 3 dollars differential! Big difference but I'm not sure about the 5 days a week thing.

That is low for south Florida from what I know. I am a new grad and the hospital I will be working starts off @ $26.02 base pay. Regardless of the organization, that is low for South Florida.

Sounds Kind of low to me. I'm a new grad in Maryland and just got hired for $25.78/hr plus $2-$4 shift diff

I'd take the lower $$ for doing 3-12's instead of 5 evenings anyday......:twocents:

Because its HCA, like the others said. Crappy payers (so says my mom). They're not too hot on paying for experience.

Specializes in Management, Emergency, Psych, Med Surg.

You are being screwed. The HCA organization is a horrible organization to work for. I was unfortunate enough to work for them twice in my career. Not only do you not get paid enough but you won't have enough staff, equipment or supplies. I know there are people out there who love working for HCA but I know just as many who had the same experience that I had. I would not work for them again if they were the only hospital in town.
