09-10 hrsa nursing scholarship

Hello all,

I'm starting this thread for the new applicants for the hrsa nursing scholarship 09-10. Tor prettylady, I think its a random selection. Its the luck of the draw.

keep your fingers crossed!

If you have student loans are you automatically disqualified? Or are you just disqualified if you are in forbearance?

No, you will not be disqualified for simply having a student loan or by being in forbearence. You will only be disqualified if those federal student loans are in default, so you should be fine.

I was reading the hrsa website and it stated that they will be given 40 million more dollars to the scholarship program. I am unsure if this is just for the nursing scholarship only, but I could not help to get a little excited since this could possibly mean that many many more scholarships could possibly be given out to 2009 applicants. I I am hoping that we hear something soon!

I too am excited about the $40 million. I was reading the info, and it seemed to me that $40 of the total $500 million was earmarked for this scholarship. However, I would imagine that would delay things a bit as they put together a way to handle the additional money and also verify the additional awardees. I have a zero EFC, got my paperwork in on time, but haven't had my credit checked. I signed up for two of the different trials and nothing yet. Unless the credit bureaus just haven't updated that yet, as it can be kinda slow. I am looking at TransUnion and Experian. Also I am in my last year of an AA program but filled out the addtional paperwork for 4 years of support so I can continue my education. I am in AZ. Any thoughts......????

I am in a horrible situation!!!I was just turned down by three lenders for a private student loan. I will not be able to start school in the fall unless by some amazing miracle I get this scholarship!!!! I am so sad.......

do you already have a bachelors degree? if not why dont you do the stafford loan. you can get up to 12,500

yeah, I already have a bachelors degree. I am due to start an absn program. I was awarded the 12,500 from stafford, but I still have an 22,000 gap to close plus living expenses. My credit is fair but my cosigner left me high and dry at the last moment and I don't have anyone else. I'm just so upset I put so muc time in effort in getting accepted and to not be able to afford to go is hurtful...I'm so sad....

You have to pay an additional $22,000 on TOP of the $12,000 you have already been given, by the fall??? Or is that your tuition for the whole year? Are you at a private school?

yes, it's 11 month accelerated program in Philly which is private. it's 4 ten week quarters. I will get about 3,125 each quarter from my stafford loans and would need 5,500 to close the gap each quarter. I don't want to start without the funding secured for the entire length of the program, since I would not be working and I have a small child to care for... I have tried cheaper schools like community colleges but, they are the most competitive! I've had my heart set on this...I really don't know what else to do!

by the way the 34,500 is for the entire year....

toya, i would go talk to the financial aid counselor at your school. there may be some other options. ideally you will get the scholarship but i know you cant 100% count on it. i really wish they would make decisions before the semester starts bc i know a lot of us are in the same situation.

personally, i am being charged for out of state tuition at my school which is 10000 a semester not including other fees and books. my stafford has been applied but i just got a bill for 12000. im not going to worry about it and just stay positive and pray. im also a single mom and dont think i can work and go fulltime for my program. i feel your pain. it will all work out, GOd willing.

Angela, thanks for words of encouragement it is appreciated.

I went to financial Aid already and they told me they offer no scholarships to students that are in the accelerated nursing program. I even called the director of special programs and scholarships who stated that the one scholarship they had for absn students was pulled for this year. I have been searching high and low trying to get funding to start school in the fall, but so far nothing has panned out. My only chance is to get this scholarship or win the lottery at this point.

I just recieved a packet from my school stating that I need to get first aid cert, criminal backround, child abuse backround, immunizations etc. I'm a little apprehensive about starting this costly process since Im not sure what my chances are of getting this scholarship. I am hoping since they requested the hrsa application a little earlier this year then they can have desisions back a little earlier. My program starts sept 21. By reading the posts from last year the first person was notified sept 15.I also read that they should be sending emails out about in state and out of state tuition soon has any body gotten this email yet?

toya: at least you could get all of those requirements done and proceed as if you are going to start your program in sep. if you dont hear from the NSP by then its possible you can defer starting until january, or you may want to consider a traditional program that starts in january.

i didnt get any email yet but im beginning to think that these 'indications' are partly rumor, like the credit check thing. the only reliable indication is when that 'update your status' link is disabled on the website.

stay positive, we will all get the scholarship!
