All FSCJ Spring 2013 Hopefuls

Hi everyone! I decided to start this thread in hopes of seeing if there is anyone excited about applying to the fscj RN program spring 2013. I am currently taking a microbiology class this summer. I would have applied for fall 2012 but met with some technical difficulties. I have 206 in total points w/o micro. Let's stay in touch and keep this ball rolling!

Well I am officially in the running to be at FSCJ Spring 2013 and submitted my application directly to the nursing office by hand. I took the NAT this morning added my scores and times .64 gives me 99.

Academic Aptitude 59

Reading Comprehension 25

Natural Science 71

My goodness, the NAT is more a speed test than anything else. I am great at math but I had to guess several of the long math questions without doing computations and sped through the last 20 reading questions in like 2 minutes without reading a thing. People forget you are not penalized for guessing. I find the spelling was the most difficult part and had my lowest RAW score of 25. The natural science was a lot of biology like cells, atp, catalysts etc and basic chemistry with a little bit of physics. It had very few, anatomy questions. I took the TEAS V test for UCF and the TEAS is much harder than the NAT in that you have to think more, but you get more time. The NAT is more a speed test and quick thinking test. That last part of the NAT is more a psychology test...I just gotta laugh at the last question of the test...something about is nursing your life long ambition, agree or disagree? Those who disagree need to be slapped silly:nono:

So with my prerequisites that add up to 101 that gives me a solid 200 points total. The only thing against me is I no longer live in duval county but my AA is from FSCJ so that should be no problem. I enquired from the nurse office and they said the night program will start off at the north campus in spring then possibly move to deerwood for summer and fall. Response will be 4-8 weeks after october 1st. So I guess after thanksgiving we should be getting some news and "lighting up" this forum again with some good news.As it comes closer to December I'll have to decide, if I get into both FSCJ and UCF, which one to go with. Good luck to everyone.

The waiting is always the worst part!!!! Come on December

hey y'all! I just came across this forum and gosh am I glad!! I have a few questions. First off, I am taking micro in the fall so that won't be counted in my points when I apply..right?? and without those points I currently have 86 points (I screwed up a bit my first few years of college before I decided on nursing so my grades aren't that all that hott). anyways, I am gearing up for taking my NAT test in the next few weeks.. are there are good books or resources that y'all recommend I study before taking the NAT? I need to do REALLLY well on it to make up for the points from my grades.. also what is this about nights and weekends only?? is that true? Because I can't do nights and weekends :/ oh and last thing..do we need to be certified in CPR or is that something you do once you are accepted?? thanks so much ! :redbeathe

Welcome!

I didn't really study for the NAT, but taking it during micro really helped me because a lot of it is on the test an it's fresh in your mind as well as some chemistry questions, do just refresh your memory on that stuff. I was mistaken about it only being nights and weekends this spring, there will be daytime as well, so no worries. And yes you will not get to count your points from micro since you are enrolled in it when applying.

Hope that helps!

You also do not have to be CPR certified to apply, just have to get certified before entering the program

Anyone from out of Duval and Nassau counties applying? I live in Clay county and will be applying with 206. something points. How many seats do they set aside for 'out of county' applicants? Am I over thinking this whole thing? I just want to get in!!

While you are able to apply while enrolled in micro, you will need to get a final grade for it to be counted, so no you can't use it in your calculations. As I said before, the NAT is more a speed test and I really do not think anything could prepare us for it. You can use testprepreview.com to brush up on biology and chemistry questions and the math contains more worded questions that turn out to need long division and multiplication that there is no time to do and no calculator is allowed. The math is mixed in with a lot of shape recognition questions also ,together those are 30minutes to do 90 questions. I think the reading was like 15 minutes to do 40 questions, so you gotta be a speed reader and then the spelling section had a huge amount of BIG words I never saw in my life.

Yes as mentioned there will be a day program as well in Spring. CPR is needed once accepted. I took mine at FSCJ north campus,so that way it shows up on my transcript and it can be done and over with in 1 day you get the cpr card same day...search for the class HED0300 Basic life support and CPR it covers AED and adult and child CPR.

As far as overall score they told me between 190-200 is the score they are looking for when you add up NAT and prerequisites etc.

Good luck with microbiology class...word of advice, don't fall behind on your reading, 2-4 chapters per week. its a lot of info to absorb.

I just finished Microbiology this summer at the south campus. It is a really tough class, but I finished with an A. I totally suggest taking Micro with Dr. Nancy Yurko. She is awesome. Like I said, it isn't easy, but she really is a great teacher. As far as the NAT exam, I am not taking mine until next month. I am totally nervous, but ready to just get done with it. For those that have taken it, is there a timer that you can see to make sure where you are at on the exam?

Hi Guys. My name is Charles. I currently work for the fire dept and am planning on trying to get in to one of the nights and weekend classes in 2013. The only pre reqs I have left is A&P2 and MCB which I am taking this fall. I am the definition of a newbie when it comes to the ins and outs of how to apply, where to apply, the whole point system ect. Any light anyone could shed would be greatly appreciated, especially about the possible class sched for the N/W's course. Was also wondering about clinicals? Will that be something we can sign up for or will they say "be here at this time?" I would rather do weekends. Thanks!

Yes there is a timer, in clear view for you to see at the top of the computer screen for each section. It turns red as a warning that the time is running out to less than a minute. There was one section I had 2 seconds left...haha

Hi everyone!

I'll be applying next month for the Spring 2013 Nursing Program along with all of you! I'm taking the NAT next month and I'm trying my best to prepare for it ahead of time. I had a few questions about the NAT exam. Will the spelling section and vocational adjustment index count towards our overall score? Or are we just being tested on academic aptitude, reading comprehension, and information in the natural sciences for the application? Also, for the reading section I see that we only get 20 minutes to answer 40 questions! Does anyone know how many passages there are and approximately how many questions for each passage? I'm trying to time myself on practice exams so i'll be able to finish that section! The timing on most of these sections has me worried. We don't have much time to answer all those questions. Also, if anyone has the application for Spring 2013 and could email it to me that would be great!

Best of luck!

-Caitlin

The NAT is humanly impossible to complete especially the reading and math sections, you gotta be a super speed reader to get it all, just keep track of the time and guess the remaining answers. I know I know, some of us are geniues and think they can do it, so did I, but just accept it and move on. It even says so at the begining of the test to just try and answer as must as you can. We are tested on all 5 sections but for calculation the spelling and vocational adjustment scores do not matter. You can email [email protected] , the progam administrator and she will email you the application she can also answer many of you guys questions.
