I want my life back...another vent thread lol

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hi everyone:

first of all, let me say I usually come to allnurses to vent/complain. I can't really complain to people in my life without the whole "you're lucky to have a job" or "nursing is so rewarding" lectures.

that said, I just need to get this out.

I REALLY miss my personal/social life. I work when everyone else is sleeping or on weekends when everyone else is off, and I'm starting to feel really isolated. I try to make plans with people when I can, but it always seems like the fun stuff goes on when I'm at work. I'm also really tired on my days off, and don't have the energy to do anything it seems.

I knew with nursing I'd have to work sometimes when I'd rather be off, but I feel like it's happening ALL the time.

Anyway, I miss my family and friends. And I miss feeling like myself.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

That's pretty normal. It does get better, but not right away. Your body will adjust to its new norm. You'll find a rhythm that works for you. You'll have to force it for awhile but it will happen. You'll make some friends who work the same kind of crazy schedule you do who will be available to socialize when you are. Your other friends and family members will start considering your schedule when they make plans and work around you. Not always, but often enough. Meanwhile, you can shop for groceries when the supermarket isn't full of tired, grumpy people with crying toddlers, you can get in to see your doctor without having to take part of the day off work, have your car serviced, have your choice of stations at the gym... there are benefits too!

Yeah I hope it does get better... But it's hard not to focus on the here and now.

I know peoole say "weekdays off are great! You can go to the doctor and grocery store without taking time off!" well I dont know about everyone else, but I don't go to the doctor often enough for that to be a real benefit, and the grocery store is just as crowded in the middle of the week...

I know exactly what you mean. I work 40 hours a week with few days off and it is rough on me physically, mentally, and socially. I'm used to working only 36 hours a week. My goal is to find a positon that requires three 12s, which is what I'm used to working instead of two 12s and two 8s.

i have felt this way since working as a nurse and especially since i relocated hours and hours and hours away for a job. just to say you aren't alone.

Do you work full-time? If you can afford it, I would recommend switching to part-time. Makes a big difference in your free time

I hear ya! I feel like work owns me. I can't leave on my half hour break, not allowed to leave the building. The long hours and lack of break is really depressing. I feel like I live just to work and have nothing else anymore.
