Can I work part-time as a new grad.?

I am still very unsure what I want to do (just graduated last Firday), but if I have to (which I really really hate) I guess I will have to go into med/surg. But my question is- How likely will they hire me a position for part-time? Reason is that my parents' own an assisted living facility and I sort of need to help them out.

I am sure they would hire you part-time. Most jobs specify if they are looking for part-time or full-time nurses. If you see a job you are interested in call them and ask.

They can't hire you for a job you didn't apply for. If you only apply for part-time jobs and they want to hire you, then they'd put you into a part-time job, right? Only problem is they might not want to hire new grads for part-time and they'll likely tell you that up front. Or they may have a full-time employee who wants part-time and they might have to go with seniority or experience. The only way to find out is to start applying.

In the area I live the hospitals only hire new grads full time. You must work for 1 year before they will consider part time or PRN. Something about the amount of money it costs for orientation/precepting and building your skills in that first year.

You need to call around and ask though. There are several scheduling options and something can always be worked out.

I was hired at 32 hours per week.

I agreed to this provided I could drop to 24 hours within the first year.

My 6 week orientation, however, was full time.

In retrospect, I am glad that I had a full year of 32 hrs per week. I really did need to be more immersed in pt care to gain my current skills.

I was hired on as a part time new grad last year. I work .60, which is 24 hours weekly (3 8's). I'm sure this depends on the hospital. The larger city hospital systems (2 in our region) would not consider hiring new grads full time so I didn't pursue that.

Look around and see what is offered in your area. It certainly can be done and yes my entire orientation was also part time. Don't let anyone tell you that new hire orientation is only effective if it is full time.
