An interesting study on facebook use by ED staff.

Oddly, facebook use was the highest when the ED was the busiest, which I assumed was due to increased staff and the higher use was a cumulative finding, not per worker, but it turns out I was wrong. When the ED is slowest, staff spent about 4 minutes per hour on facebook, when it was the busiest staff spend almost 20 minutes per hour on facebook per staff member.

Just throwing this idea out there but what if your phone automatically connects to the hospitals WiFi and the fb app is always connected? I know if I try to use the allnurses app on my phone at work I repeatedly get redirected to a website about appropriate use of the hospitals WiFi access.

We're forbidden from using fb at work. In 12 hours I might log in on my phone once, for 2 minutes

Don't do FB, but I would think breaks would be ok to go online.

Really? Anyone remember work before the internet? how the heck did people goof off then?

We had to fax jokes between locations.. I even remember my dad bringing home xeroxed jokes from his warehouse.

Back in my cubicle days, i was guilty of too much internet surfing. These days, there is just too much to get done.

I do.......we would have water fights with syringes and play rolling chair Olympics!

I think the increase during "busy times" there is a lot of lag time and like imintrouble said it's mindless wandering to calm your nerves.....sitting in CT waiting for labs, test, eval.....we used to go grab a quick smoke out the ambulance bays...not we mindlessly surf to reset the brain...I get it.

Well I definitely do not spend 20 minutes per hour on Facebook during our busiest times... :sarcastic:

I see a lot of Pinterest browsing at work when I am there lol!

Facebook is blocked from our computers and we aren't allowed to have our cell phones. We get written up the first time and then suspended the next time if we're caught with them.

The study sounds shocking but all it really shows is that an average of 4.3 staff per hour checked their Facebook page. And that was with 68 workstations! I access FB during my off time but I see comments from other staff about how they are doing at work. It's a mixed bag. Sometimes they are getting support and sometimes they are goofing off a little. Our boss has said no, but I still see it.
