Applying for UIC DNP...

Specialties Doctoral

Updated:   Published

Hi all! I am applying for the DNP program at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) with a primary care AGNP specialty. Does anyone have any suggestions on building a strong application? I have worked mostly on a med/surg unit and a surgical step down for the past 4 years (as an active duty RN). I have been on 2 deployments. My undergrad GPA was 3.55. Any suggestions are welcome as I am stressing out about the application process, separation from the military, and a move back to Chicago. Thank you!

When I asked during the info session, I was told they are looking to accept 80-100 students between all of the campuses and all of the specialties

I can relate! I completed a FAFSA and applied for the UIC scholarship. If admitted, then there are more scholarships that you can apply to.

So they said they wouldn't be making final decisions until April?? That seems like a long timeā€¦ I'll be interviewing on Monday. I'm really excited but so nervous!

I had my interview yesterday...I thought it went pretty well. I didn't know most of the courses would be held online with some required campus classes. I was really hoping they would have mostly physical classroom time.... I wish I could attend the info sessions, but I'm in TX. Did/Is anyone go/going to the sessions? Can you post some of the stuff they went over or PM me please?? She said mid April until they release decisions! Ayyy...and we wait again.

Man I really thought it would be quicker than that! I will be attending the info session after my interview on Monday so I will let you guys know if I find out anything important

The info session was only about 35-40 minutes. It went over history of UIC, the core classes of the DNP, and gave us a folder with sample schedule if going full-time. She said if you're not a good writer, then get help because it will include a lot. One of the final things you do in the program is a proposal project that you end up actually implementing and ideally become a published author. Most of the people at the session I attended were interested in FNP. Full-time FNP student can be done in 3 years if starting with BSN. For part-time it is 4 or 5 years.

My interview is next week Thursday and I am applying to one of the regional campuses (Peoria). I hope my interview goes well. I will be attending the info session which is after my interview. I will let you know if I learn anything that is not mentioned on this thread.

I had my interview yesterday, and it was incredibly energizing! It also made me realize that there's no way I can do it full-time. My interviewer (one of the Quad Cities campus faculty and the director of the RN-BSN program) explained that they honestly don't recommend anyone do the DNP full-time unless they are in a position to become a true full-time student, with few outside commitments.

So, I'm really hoping they can work some magic with financial aid for me!

I ended up missing my interview on Thursday because my flight got canceled due to the winter storm Vulcan and the next available flight was on Friday morning, so I called the UIC and they were able to do my interview on Friday. It went pretty good. My interviewer was the director of the regional campus I applied to. After the interview she gave me a power-point hand-out about the program. The program seems really intense and they require only A's and B's. If you get one C you go on academic probation and if you get more than 1 C you can have possible dismissal. I plan to go full-time and I do not plan to work so she said that was good because it is hard to work and go full-time. She also said that exams are taken on campus and some of the classes would require you to be on-campus a few days for the semester. Orientation is 1 day and they will let you know once you are accepted sometime in April. So the waiting begins.

Good luck, nursecammy!

Thanks! Good luck to you too! ...and everyone else, I hope we all get accepted!

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences!! Lets hope we find out early April...rather than mid. I don't think I can handle waiting so long!

Any news? I'm kind of half-heartedly wishing they'd be quicker than a month in getting back to us.
