Seasonal Flu and H1N1 Vaccine-will you get it if forced by your employer? why/why not

Nurses COVID

I was listening to talk radio this week where they discussed a mandate in NY that all healthcare workers will be required to get the vaccines if they want to continue to work with patients. There were many that called in and said they felt it a violation of their rights. I'd like to explore both sides of the topic-we can have differing opinions and that is ok. What do you think?

I will be getting both by personal choice. I have already rec'd the seasonal and awaiting H1N1, which I have been told, will be free at our school.

I'm in OH and my employer (a hospital) encourages us, but does not require us to get the seasonal flu vaccine. Since it is free of charge, I did get the flu vaccine.

I am not getting the H1N1 vaccine. It is way overhyped, I'm not pregnant, and I don't have a weakened immune system. I have enough sense to wash my hands frequently and carry hand sanitizer with me. I feel the cons outweigh the benefits at this point with the vaccine being so new. I'll let people try it out for a year or two first before I get it (if it sticks around that long).

wait

time out...

they use aborted fetal tissue in vaccinations? sweet baby jesus...

UPDATE.

My employer has recently changed the rules. If we refuse the vaccination for any reason (religious, allergy, personal preference, etc) we are required to sign a waiver form, attend 20 hours of flu education, and wear a mask for the entire duration we are at work during flu season.

I'm not very happy about this, especially since the only version of the H1N1 vaccine we have is the nasal form which is a live virus. If I take that, I will be unable to be around my grandmother, due to a medical condition. However, I don't need 20 hours of flu education and I am not comfortable with being required to wear a mask while at work for the next few months.

lol 20 hours of flu education and wear a mask? I think the best education is WASH YOUR HANDS! i saved you 20 hours of education :chuckle

I know! It's not like I'm refusing the seasonal flu vaccine or I am refusing the vaccine because I don't understand the benefits. I'm fullly aware of both the benefits and the risks. I do my research. I shouldn't be required to be education on the flu and the vaccine just because I choose not to participate in a brand new vaccine. I also don't want to wear a mask 12.5 hours a day.

Do I suck it up and attend the flu education and wear the mask? Do I get the vaccine and quit seeing my grandmother? Do I find another job? Hard to move on to a new job when I'm leaving the area to start a new job and nursing school in May. Plus, I need continuous coverage of medical insurance and the bills need paid!

To crunchymom,

Smallpox is the only disease that has been completely eradicated. There is no one around that can spread that diasese, therefore we are not immunized against it anymore. It does exist in a few labs and could possible be used a a bio weapon. Remember just a few years ago the gov't discussing re-vaxing? ;) I believe the military has started giving it again. They stopped a few years after I left the military, but started up after the bio scare.

The rest of the diseases still exist and indeed could be spread to the US. That is why we still vaccinate against them. I think polio might be getting close to being eradicated...maybe around 1k cases worldwide last year.

To the op,

I have already got the flu vaccine and so did my kids. I will probably have to get the H1N1 since it will be required for nursing school. I'm on the fence about getting it for my kids - but I will discuss that with my ped.

Specializes in Too many to list.
If you get a disease naturally, you're more likely not to get it ever. Say for instance...my kid gets the measles, he/she won't get it again because it's a natural immunity.

Flu is not measles. Flu mutates contantly to outwit the immune system so there is no permanent immunity. Measles does not. Do you really believe that you cannot get the flu more than once? This pediatrician tested positive twice, several months apart. And, that was confirmed swine flu, twice, not seasonal flu.

Dr. Debra Parsons, a pediatrician at Kid Care West in Cross Lanes, said both she and her son came down with identical flu-like symptoms in August.

... a more specific follow-up "sub-typing" test at the state lab confirmed she had H1N1.

Parsons and her son recovered from the symptoms but in October they struck again and were much worse, she said. Both had body aches, fever, chills, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

This time Parsons swabbed both herself and her son, and both tests came back positive for Influenza A. She said she pushed for further testing to determine the strain, and the lab ran an immunofluorescence test on the specimens. They again tested positive for H1N1, she said.

Vaccines only provide limited protection....that's why some people still get the flu or measles or whatever even after being vaccinated. That's why I say heck if vaccines aren't 100% effective, what's the point of injecting toxins? Not asking you, lol....it's just my reasoning.

It takes some time to develop the full antibody protection, and if you are exposed to the virus before that happens, you may get sick. But, even though not 100% protected yet, your kids might develop enough antibodies to protect them from dying, though they might still get sick, and that really is the point of vaccination.

You might be able to detect antibodies in 8-10 days, but maximum response will take about 3 weeks. That's why detection of a prior infection uses antisera collected 3 weeks after onset, and why boosters are given 3 weeks after first shot. However, an infection shortly after a vaccine might make the infection worse initially because the immune system is battling the vaccine, and could be more easily overwhelmed by a new infection. Full protection is defined by peak antibody levels, and antibody levels at 8-10 days is far from a peak level.

And most of these diseases are treatable, so it doesn't scare me.

Some of the parents in the kids thread admit to not taking this flu seriously either. Most of these cases were treated, but the treatment was not succesful, CrunchyMama.

I'm in nursing school and we are mandated to have both H1N1 and the seasonal by Dec. 1st. It's either get the shot or your out of nursing school. Wasn't planning on getting either but not really left an option at this point.

Hysterical? Mothers like myself are hysterical because we're worried about the ingredients in vaccines being harmful? Isn't that being cautious? And protective? We're not worried they're harmful...it's a fact! Why don't you do yourself a favor and look up such chemicals as mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum and whatever else you can find depending on the vaccine.

Except that most vaccines don't contain mercury anymore (in spite of there not being conclusive evidence that it caused a problem in the minuscule does that are in vaccines). Even two of the three versions available of the flu and H1N1 vaccines come mercury free.

So, while I wouldn't say hysterical....I'd definitely say reactionary.

Are you talking about the devastating effects of measles, mumps or rubella? Or the MMR vaccine? Because I know plenty of moms that feel horrible because of the devastating effects the MMR had on their child....including death. So I'm glad you feel vaccines are 100% safe and you put 100% trust in the vaccine makers....I'm glad you're not hysterical. But wait....why are you arguing about the fact that everyone should be vaccinated. Who's the hysterical one? Oh and I'm wondering....since we don't vaccinate for smallpox anymore, why hasn't that come back?

So, are you saying that, You Personally, know "plenty of moms" who's children have had devastating effects (including death) from the MMR? Really?

An amazing fete as the incidence of documented effects from the MMR is so low.

You're question re: why we don't vaccinate for smallpox has already been answered.

I think that we, as a culture, have forgotten how many kids were disabled or died from the diseases we vaccinate to prevent.

I know! It's not like I'm refusing the seasonal flu vaccine or I am refusing the vaccine because I don't understand the benefits. I'm fullly aware of both the benefits and the risks. I'm curious....if you wouldn't refuse the seasonal flu vaccine, why on earth would you refuse the H1N1. They're the same shot, with the exception that the seasonal shot has three dead virus particles, whereas the H1N1 only has one.

This makes me laugh, lol! I don't mean to rain on your parade really but have you ever even looked into the ingredients and what each chemical is capable of? According to the CDC themselves....some containers of the flu vaccine contains mercury. And I've looked and I don't see on their site that they've listed the ingredients for the H1N1 vaccine yet...so where did you see what's in that one? For me personally...mercury is just one of the many worries of what's in the vaccine. There's other toxins, not to mention aborted fetal tissue and other mammal products they use to grow the vaccines in. So for me...mercury isn't my only worry. Anyway back to the point of this thread....if you or anyone else want to get vaccinated, go for it. But for those that don't want to for whatever reason, shouldn't be "mandated" to do so. I believe my 1st line of defense is my immune system...we have it for a reason.

Huh??? I'd be fascinated to see documetation about this.

Here's how they make the vaccine:

An excerpt from the package insert of sanofi pasteur's Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine

Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 Monovalent Vaccine, an inactivated influenza virus vaccine, for intramuscular use, is prepared from influenza viruses propagated in embryonated chicken eggs. The virus-containing allantoic fluid is harvested and inactivated in formaldehyde. Influenza virus is concentrated and purified in a linear sucrose density gradient solution using a continuous flow centrifuge. The virus is then chemically disrupted using a non-ionic surfactant, polyethylene glycol p-isooctylphenyl ether (TritonĀ® X-100), producing a "split virus". The split virus is further purified and then suspended in sodium phosphate-buffered isotonic sodium chloride solution.

So, unless the "aborted fetal tissue" is the chicken eggs....I'm not sure where you got your information from. Oh and notice the complete lack of any kind of "mammal products."

The virus is inactivated in formaldehyde....but is then separated from that solution.

If its your choice to get the H1N1 vaccination then it was your decission. However, the vaccinations should never be mandatory because everyone including healthcare workers should have the option to choose.
