i know, guyz only...also some of this you may know already...but here it is anyway:

The doctor will feel the scrotum to locate each vas deferens. The area is numbed with a local anesthetic. One or two tiny cuts are made in the scrotum. Each vas deferens is pulled out until it forms a loop, and then it is cut. Some men feel a light tugging sensation when this is done. A section may be cut out of the loop and removed. The two ends are tied or stitched closed or may be sealed with heat (cauterized). Scar tissue from the surgery helps block the tubes. The vas deferens is placed back inside the scrotum, and the skin cuts are closed with stitches that will dissolve and do not have to be removed. The procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

The procedure may be done in the doctor's office by a family practitioner, a doctor who specializes in the urinary and male reproductive systems (urologist), or a general surgeon.

No-scalpel vasectomy is a new technique that uses a small clamp with pointed ends. The clamp is poked into the skin over the scrotum and then opened, instead of using a scalpel to cut the skin. The benefits of this procedure include less bleeding, a smaller hole in the skin, and fewer complications.

What to Expect After Surgery

The scrotum will be numb for 1 to 2 hours after a vasectomy. The man should apply cold packs to the area and lie on his back as much as possible for the rest of the day. Snug underwear will help ease discomfort and protect the area.

There may be some swelling and minor pain in the scrotum for several days after the surgery. Most men can return to work in 1 or 2 days, unless their work is strenuous. They should avoid heavy lifting for a week.

Sexual intercourse can resume as soon as the man is comfortable, usually in about a week. However, there usually are sperm in the tubes beyond the spot where the tubes were cut. The man needs to return to the doctor to have a sperm count to make sure that the procedure was successful. To prevent pregnancy, an alternative method of birth control must be used until the sperm count is zero, which usually takes several months. The sperm count test is usually done about 2 months after the procedure or after 10 to 20 ejaculations. The man is not sterile until the sperm count is zero, so the couple must use other forms of birth control until the count is confirmed.

A vasectomy does not interfere with a man's sex drive, ability to have erections, sensation of orgasm, or ability to ejaculate. Some men have occasional mild aching in the testicles during sexual arousal for a few months after the surgery.

Well Bubba,

It has been a while but I will try to remember.

Prior requires nothing special, other than the fact you will need to shave the night before. For that you will need a new razor!

The day of the procedure you go in, lay on the table, get cleaned, get numbed, feel some tugging, and that is about it.

The crucial part is the recovery. You will need a good jock strap, you must have support afterwards. I think I wore one constantly for about a week.

I was able to retire home and spend the next two days with an ice bag on my freshly snipped parts almost constantly. I had no swelling or bruising that you often hear about. Probably because I did nothing but watch movies and ice myself down. Walking was a little slower for a few days, and stairs for about a week or so. I had dissolving sutures, so I did not have to go back for removal.

I waited for about 2 weeks prior to resuming sex. I just wanted to make sure nothing went wrong with the recovery. It must have worked, have not had any kids since.

The most important thing is the recovery, do not rush any part of it. After wearing the jock strap make sure you have brief type underwear, you don't want to be swinging freely for a while.

Hey Bubba,

Its no big deal. Make sure you have a jock strap and plenty of ice for the first couple days. After the first day I felt like a mule kicked me, but by day 2 I felt a lot better, day 3 I stopped taking the vicoden. I had it done on friday & back to work on tuesday, more importantly I was back in action in less than 2 weeks. (i am pleased to say that orgasms & fluid volume are completely unchanged compared to before the procedure!

Hey, forget the ice! My husband's doc was a riot; told him to go home, plop down on the couch, open a cold beer, and rest it between his legs between sips....that worked out fairly well for him, actually! :chuckle

this brings back some fond memories. my husband decided to get a vasectomy when he found out i was pregnant w/our 3rd child. i had no say in this. i went to the hospital to pick him up after the procedure was done, when i saw him walking down the main street to meet me. he was still under the effects of the local anesthetic and was feeling pretty cocky (ahem). as we rode home together, he was saying 'no sweat', 'piece of cake'. well hours later his scrotum blew up to the size of a grapefruit. i honestly don't know why but i couldn't stop laughing, as i applied bags of frozen vegetables. he remained in that state for around 24 hours. so me thinks that the advice of a jock strap, tight briefs, a scrotal sling or whatever to contain the swelling is good advice. ask my husband, he'll tell you.

LoL you men crack me up. Try childbirth, or a kidney stone supposedly equal. I swear if men had to birth we wouldnt have overpopulation :)
