Hi fellow correctional nurse's. I'm having a hard time convincing a coworker of mine to stop making contact with an inmate. I've tried to explain to her that they can be manipulative and that she can lose her job. She said she came to me about it because she "heard" that I did it and kept my job :nono:

The truth is that my husband had been arrested around the same time I started and I had to inform the administrator so that I could be move to another facility and she refused to move me because she needed me on the shift I was on. He was there for 3 days and somehow it was said that I met him there (funny how we were able to get married in jail within that time frame-WHATEVER!).

Anyway, if you know any situations gone wrong please post so that i may refer her here.

For those of you that are correctional nurses - How do you like it? I just accepted a position as a Full-Time LPN in a Local County Prison. I also have heard the stories of nurses being escorted out because of relations with inmates.....so simple as bringing in food for them, writing them letters, etc....we need to remember, more so than any other patient or resident, we are there to do a job....not to make friends, etc:nono:...and to remember, they are INSIDE for a reason...wish me luck as I enter my "new adventures in nursing"....:redlight:

If a woman isn't getting attention from an appropriate person, they will start giving it to her.

I agree. When you read case studies of employees who are compromised, it really boils down to attention and, also, vulnerability. People can work in the system for years, never break a rule but if there's some big stress in their life that develops and they suddenly have a need for attention, etc. that's what makes them vulnerable to inmates.

Wow, what an eye-opener this thread is...I would have thought the kind of woman that would be stupid enough to fall into this, would be too flaky, dim-witted or emotionally unstable to become a nurse to begin with.

The obvious theme here is that this NEVER ends well. Has anyone ever seen anyone marry or continue a relationship after she's fired and they live happily ever after? I'll eat my hat.

is she crazy?

Georgia used to have the law of 1-3 years for being w/ an I/M. According to our Warden, the law has changed to 10-30 years and you do at least 10!!! I haven't had any of my nurses to do this, but I have had 2 admin. assist. to do this within the last 6 months. One of my admins. was here for 5 years before she found 'her' man, and then the next one was here for less than 6 months before she lost her job to the I/M. They were both told very firmly upfront and all thru the course of their jobs what the consequences would be.

The reason that most of us just cannot comprehend the mentality of these people is because we have the correct mindset and cannot phathom the thought of this stupidity. We know right from wrong, and understand our jobs.:nono::nono:

I here that it happens to guards also....they meet up with these inmates and lose it all.....

More so than the bad attitudes, I've been told to "harden myself" for the cry baby stories....that is how they attempt to suck you in....

Oh yeah ... some inmate was trying to tell me today that he was wrongly incarcerated ...

I looked up and said: "Save it for your lawyer ... I've heard it a million times. Now, I've got to finish this paperwork regarding your healthcare."

They're always trying to find out information about you ... where did you work before, how many kids you have, etc. but ... I don't tell them anything about myself.

The PM nurse and I both have the same first name. We went to nursing school together and she was kind and generous. Also easily munipulated. The jail commander, who was new to us, came STORMING into my office with his face bright red, neck veins distended, and smoke pouring out of his ears. "What kind of a car do you drive?", he yelled. I told him. (I was scared to deathand KNOW I got a few more grey hairs.) "You don't drive a new jeep grand cheroke?"....."Uh, no, that's the OTHER one. What's wrong?" "Never mind..I'll tell you later." Turns out this other nurse became involved with an unsentenced inmate. He convinced her to 'lend' him her new car. She was stupid enough to do so. He drove home, showed the car to his PREGNENT wife, and told her, "see this car? This is my b____'s car, my b____ is the jail nurse and I was getting F***** every day in jail." After they pried the woman off of the ceiling, she called the commander. The nurse had told everybody here that she had lent her car to a friend of her daughter's and he hadn't returned it. She hadn't been to work in several days. Turns out THAT's where it was. She had been having sex with him in one of the rooms here.

Yes, she was fired, lost her pension here and she was also charged with filing a false police report. I don't know what action the BRN took. But there's NO ONE who is worth loosing your license over.

Your friend should RUN the other way. Also, you may have to report this to the 'powers that be'. I would be in IAB if I knew this and didn't.

No good will come of this relationship. It is simply NOT worth it. :nono::nono::nono::nono: Can't say it enough.

Just out of curiosity ... Where were the CO's during all of this? Where was the security?

I can't imagine an inmate walking out of my facility and driving away in a car! There's only one way to get out of our facility and they check every single car, no matter how well they know you. The trunks are searched, every ID is checked.

There's always a long line of cars during shift changes because everybody has to wait for the security checks. Everything else is covered by an electric fence. If you even go near it, you're fried even if you don't touch it.

We did have one inmate escape in a garbage truck ... it turns out he was crushed and broke his hip ... they found him at the dump. Of course, now they search the garbage trucks before they go out.

But to just drive out in a staffer's car? I just can't imagine how that would happen!

I'll give you a great example.

Where I live there was a guard at a Maximum Security prison that had a "thing" with an inmate, and he got released.

He came to her house...not sure what happened, but she shot and killed him...she was a single mother of two very small children. They charged her with murder...they haven't released any details.

Murder or not..Would she have been in that situation if she wasn't fooling around with a former Maximum Security Prison inmate?

Probably not.

Sorry, should have been clearer, he was an unsentenced I/M when they met, went to court, was given 30 days as a trustee, (hah!:lol2:), and the car thing happened when he was released. She saw him on the outside, too, and it turned out that about 10 other I/M had her cell #, home #, and address....:banghead:sheeesh

Thanks for the clarification. Although I'm still wondering how a nurse could have sex with an inmate in one of our rooms without getting caught. First of all ... there's no vacant rooms around except for the supply closets and people are in and out of those all the time. And because there are so many CO's around ... it would be damn near impossible in our facility.

Maybe this stuff happens in the middle of the night when there's less people around? Even so ... when we've had cases of female staff having sex with inmates on the premises ... they were investigated and were caught on video tape. So I'm just curious how this was missed where you work.

Nevertheless ... I've said it before and I'll say it again ...

Even if you are completely screwed up in the head, have no self esteem and serious psychological problems ... and don't care if they have HIV, Hep C and all of these other diseases.

I still can't figure out why anyone would want to have sex with an inmate. Those guys STINK! They smell really, really bad ... ugh. I have to hold my nose every time I do an examination.
