Anyone work at the VA?? Need info
The VA where i'm employed- I was hired on an open interview day. I applied and interviewed on the same day( practically promised the job too). 2 weeks later I was offered the job officially via a call from HR and 2 weeks after that I was sitting in orientation. The regular hiring process can be long and daunting so I've heard.

AWOL is absent without leave. You get AWOL for not not calling in for your tour to ask for leave; you also get it from taking time off (SL; CB) without accrued leave available to apply.

BSN Equivalent
One comes to mind- Clinical Nurse Leader. I think what your friend is speaking of is what is offered here http://www.mcg.edu/son/cnl.htm for students with a bachelor's degree in some other discipline than nursing. The following link shows the prereqs for a non-nursing degree http://www.mcg.edu/son/cnlreqs.htm As far as schools that offer Master's with associate's in Nursing-there are many. if the local schools in your are don't offer it, there are many online that do. It's called a RN-MSN degree. The Clinical component is satisfied at the associate degree level which is why you can obtain your Master's online. Some MAster's programs sometimes have an additional small clinical component-nothing major. Hope this helps.

Augusta area jobs
RN pay may not be significantly different but it probably will be. I believe that University is excellent to their nurses as a whole without regard to title. The VA (the only union hospital) takes care of their RN's. The union is strong and you will be working for the government and entitled to the pretty much the same benefits as your husband (i.e TSP). RN's also get 1 day every pay period leave versus the 1/2 day the rest of government workers get. I could go on. The reality is that RN's usually make the rounds and end up at the VA. The drawback is that the VA still runs 3 shifts instead of the usual 12hr tours. The VA also has a payscale and is different based on whether you hold an associates, bachelors or masters. The other hospitals don't differentiate.

Augusta area jobs
MCG is the Trauma center. University Hospital is the best as far as I'm concerned. Don't forget about the VA medical Center and Eisenhower at Ft. Gordon. All of the hospitals are offering bonuses for select specialties. I work at the VA, right now Medical Rehab and spinal Cord have high sign ons. you can check the websites. Trinity hospital is also here. Aiken Regional is about 15 min. away but it is in south carolina. cost of living is less than Atlanta and the Augusta pays fine for this area. next question? a how important are benefits

Demands from inmates
I don't have this problem because there is a nurse downstairs who can handle these things while i'm on pill call. If it's just a regular check with no symptoms or not required before meds=they can wait. Otherwise, if they're feeling bad or complaining of symptoms, I check and that's all about covering you. I'd rather know they are playing games then not know they are in danger.

LPN starting first day in correctional nursing
It really depends on where you work. I do pill call for the entire jail-alone. I have two pill calls HIV and diabetics and then a full pill call late before lights out. In between, I help with in processing of inmates in the jail. There is a RN who works in medical for emergencies and inprocessing and treatments. Corrections isn't for everyone but just remember the rules. Treat the inmate as you would the elderly patient at the nursing home. We're not there to judge or be jury. Who you are as a nurse should not change no matter what demographic you work for. Keep your interactions professional and honey, please don't fall for their lines. Not saying you're the kind but it happens-alot. Let me know if you have more questions. P.S. Women are the worst inmates in my observation.

Indiana State University
Indiana State University's program is recognized by Georgia Board of Nursing. As others have stated, there is no way to determine whether it is an online class or not. You can receive your license via endorsement in Georgia if you have sat for any State's board unless noted. They answered my questions and so I'm a go on this. WITHOUT college network!

Bunch of questions LPN in corrections..
The self defense class was kind of funny. Should you have one? Yes. Will you get one? Probably not. Some facilities are better than others at giving you some kind of course on the way of corrections and all you will need to know. Personally, I love corrections. The work is straight forward, very cut and dry. To me inmates are humorous. Every nurse has her own way of dealing with them. I have worked prisons but I am working Jail part time and my philosophy is that even I find out what they are there for it can't change how I treat them. I'm just that way. Jail nursing makes it difficult not to know the offense because it's local and if you read the paper or watch the news you will know. I serve people incarcerated. Yep they're incarcerated and I serve them. I've seen people I've grown up with, school mates, relatives etc. I can't afford to allow myself to get involved in their mess or their madness but I treat them with respect and they respect me. These people don't always go to prison some of them do a few months, weeks, days and even hours and they're released and I'll see them in the Mall or Target. People remember how you treat them-period. If someone steps out of line with you then let the CO or Deputy handle it. Find you a rhythm and don't let them slow you down. At the jail where I work, I do pill call and there's another nurse who does booking and "I need to see the nurse" and etc. As far as HIV, do what you normally do and let that fear go.

Salary for starting LPN?
Like Commuter, I also do well though I am married. Our wages are lower than most states. But cost is living is Low here. I have always been very good at commanding an above average salary just based on my experience, education, and certifications. The average for my area is $14-$16/hr. I have never made less than $20/hr. Presently, I make $21/hr at my FT gig, just over $19 at my PT gig and $25-27 at my agency gigs. Our cars are paid for with the exception of the one we purchased a few months ago. We also sold our already paid for condo and bought a house for less than $150,000 (which gets you a good bit of house). Now my cars and condo were paid off before I married. (I learned that from another nurse in fact- while I’m young work and rest later). There are more affordable homes in my area as well as much more affluent homes in my area but my home is centrally located and I’m only 15 minutes away from every other side of town. My house in a different area would have been cheaper but the location is priceless. You will have to fight for a decent pay depending on where you live. Some jobs know your value and pay you and some will try not to. Never let someone pay you less than you’re worth. I’m confident in my skills and accept nothing less. You should do the same.

rn moving to Augusta
University is not the greatest place to work as an LPN but my blessing was a specialty floor. I've worked MCG as well and it's okay too. The VA you went to was the downtown division which is where human resources is so now that I think about it, it was a crazy question to ask you. Dialysis would definitely give you the tour you want. Have you considered Aiken Regional as well. It's less than 20 minutes from Augusta. I've worked Aiken too and it took me 17 min exactly to get there.
