Has anyone worked for Corizon? Please share your experience, good or bad. Recently we switched from Wexford Health to Corizon. So far, I dont hear anything good.

I am also curious about how many peoole you pass meds to on a AM or PM med pass, and whether all psych meds are watch and swallow. Do you pre-pour meds for your shift? Or do you pop pills out and look at the MAR?

Thanks!

I have worked for Corizon for almost 2 years. Not sure what state your contract is with but I'm in Missouri. We do not allow pre pouring and psych meds are all watch take. So are anti seizure meds, gabapentin, HIV and TB meds. I enjoy working for Corizon. I used to work in hospitals but was not willing to take on a management position. At Corizon, I felt I would be supported and not left hanging out to dry so to speak. Within 6 months, I was promoted to DON. I have had a lot of support and guidance as well as a mentor. Good luck!

Thank you. I am just curious how this will go with this transition, many of our psych meds are with the inmates as a keep on person or KOP. They are being switched over, and one of our yards has over 1,300 inmates on it. I am not sure how 1 nurse will pass meds to about 400-500 people, Corizon is saying that this possible. I am curious how this will go. So far I like the other changes, but am unsure about this one. I picture the lines being hours long, and inmates not being compliant. The orientation process seems good so far. We are transitioning over from one private company to another (Wexford Health Sources lost the contract)

I worked for Corizon for about 3 years. Started out Correctional MedicalServices (CMS). CMS bought out Prison Health Services (PHS) and then renamed the company Corizon. In short Corizon is CMS and PHS combined. Corizon is an acronym for Corrections and Horizon (Corizon).

Staffing seemed to be the main issue and contract adherence. As a contract employee you will almost always have to extend the olive branch to the "state employees".

It is important to know the contract and what is pertinent to your duties. Do not deviate from that unless your supervisor says so. The contract is key, the contract can be modified when significant changes occur and should, so medical staff can easily absorb the changes, and extra duties those changes will make. Ask about the generalities of the contract when you get an interview e.g. staffing ratio, licensed staff versus non-licensed staff, deliverables such as audits/reports, get a feeling of your possible bosses knowledge of the contract, the more they know the better your site will be thus better working environment.

Good luck in your correctional quest. It is challenging, hard, fun, exciting, heartbreaking and worth the while to be part of a team that makes such an impact on society

I have worked for corizon since they started. I started with correctional medical services and they merged with prison health services. Then they created corizon (correctional healthcare on the horizon). I did receive a nice raise. I am currently comparible with other nursing positions in hospitals. I am in Indiana. I thought maybe you are in Arizona, I know we recently got Arizona. I pass meds to apr. 150 offenders. My time is set at 0830 so I have the 1 hour before and after. I can get it done in about 1 1/2 hours. My officer checks their mouth to see if meds are taken. I do not pre set except if I am going to take medication to segregation or to the youths. I always fill at the time the offender comes to my window and look at the MARS, sometimes I have to check things in the computer. So my computer is very close to my work area. I also pass out the kop's during med pass. There was a different way that I use to pass meds. the mars were marked am and hs. So in the am I would start as soon as I could. there were no patient specific medications and no medications in their cell. So I passed medications to about 400 offenders in the am. This did take a few hours. I like the current way better. I usually am very happy with my job. We are up for contract negotiations and things are getting a little frazzled. For the most part I think we are a good company. Who do you know that is 100% satisfied with their job?

Hi, do you mind me asking which facility you work for in Indiana? I'm in Indiana also and I'll be graduating in June. I want to go into correctional nursing.

All psych meds are handfeed, which are "watch and swallow" as you say. Also, Neurontin, Tegretol, Flomax for example. We are not allowed to pre-pop meds. They're supposed to be popped and given to the offender and signed off on the MAR.

I also was with CMS first, and now Corizon. I haven't seen many changes.

Thank you! Do you like working for the company? Is there much of a difference between what you do as an RN and LPN for Corizon?

How do you pass meds on 150 inmates? Wow! I am working in LTC, and I want to get out. It takes me two to three hours to pass meds on 35 patients! I was thinking about corrections, now I am hesitant. Are you all short of staff, or is this the norm for a corrections RN?

There is little difference between the roles of the RN and LPN at our facility. With the exception of the infirmary, the RN and LPN assignments are interchangeable.
