Hey everyone! I was just thinking today how hard our jobs as aides really are. And I realized that especially in our field, it is so easy to dwell on the negatives-coworkers, responsibilities, etc. My question is, what is one positive thing that stands out most for you as a CNA?

I'll start. I had a patient who was 104yrs old. And she loved to garden. Everyday I had her as a patient, we would talk about gardening, and the things we were growing. When she was discharged, I came to work the next day and received a package of vegetables from her garden, with a thank you note that said she was so happy to have me care so much about her and her life. I made her feel less than a patient and more of a person.

I have had numerous positives since being an aide (13 years). One particular is a patient of mine (at the doctors office) send me a note at home to thank me for taking her concerns seriously . She had to go out of her way to find out where I lived.It just was nice.

In the homes, it seems something happens everyday that reaffirms my desire to care for people.

That being said, I start a new chapter in my life next week as a CNA in the ICU. I am very anxious to get started and make a difference not only in the patients life but the family.

I am a CNA in a county emergency room where 80 percent of my patients are non english speakers. I learned from a young age to speak spanish fluently and I use it to make a difference in my patients care daily. A few days ago as I left and said good bye to my nurses and patients after shift I was told by several patients in a row... que dios te bendiga por ser tan bueno con nosotros by like 8 patients... translation ... god bless you for being so good with us. I felt really god that these people felt that me caring for them made a difference... it was a warm and fuzzy in a very busy day...

The daughter of one of my clients gave me a blanket she'd crocheted herself and said that she hoped it kept me as warm and fuzzy as I made her mom feel. There are others too, but that one sticks out in my mind right now. :redbeathe

We have a woman at our facility who has severe Alzheimer's. She has a really hard time even forming sentences that make sense, but she's one of my favorite residents.

Anyway, one day I was painting her nails and about 2 weeks later I came in her room and saw they were still painted the color that I had painted them. I said, "Wow, Mary*, I really love your nails!" And to my surprise, she answered back "Well you painted them, didn't you?" It made me feel really special when she remembered me, and it's little things like that, that make me realize I do love my job no matter how hard it can be.

I love running my butt off and at the end of a night have patients tell me thank you, or even better have the nurses say "Thanks for all you do, I don't know how'd we survive without you."

I had one patient that started to decline very rapidly. She was very combative but never for me for some reason. Toward the end she had a very hard time talking more than a couple of words at a time. I was finishing AM care with her one day and waiting for an assist and she said, "You are an admirable woman and I am honored to have been in your care." It was one of the saddest and happiest things anyone has ever said to me. She lived about a week after that :(
