should I appeal

Nursing Students CNA/MA

So this was my 2nd time taking the cna exam clinical part and I was confident after but later on in the day i check my results and I failed due to (handwashing) I'm furious because the proctor stated i didn't wash between my fingers and my nails. Which i KNOW FOR A FACT I did I know hygiene is TOP priority in the medical field. I made sure I cleaned my nails, my thumb wrist etc (with lather) but yet i got a failing grade on it. I want to appeal I feel like I'm getting held back from chasing my dream to be a male nurse. Even the other aide I was performing said she dont understand how I failed the hand washing. I'm so aggravated right now.....

I understand if I made a mistake I would claim it but I'm sure I put my 110% in the handwashing with the paper towels and etc

I'm not sure how you could even go about appealing that, would your classmate back you up? Even then I'm not sure where it would get you. In my state they give you 3 tries for the clinical part of the exam. I can understand your frustration but you might be better off re-taking it. Maybe schedule it at a different facility next time? Good luck, if nursing is your dream don't give up.

Hey hun! I am so sorry to hear that this happened to you! I, too had a similar situation. It was even worse when I was partnered up with another hopeful. Well while she was cleaning a set of dentures she was so super shaky (which is understandable because we were all a little nervous), that she dropped one of the dentures into the contaminated sink. Of course it was a accident but that is considered a critical fail. Well somehow she ended up passing even though throughout her skills she was repeatably all over the place, and committed a critical fail. I, however failed all because I did not tighten the gate belt to the liking of my proctor. I was so sad because I felt that the gate belt was definitely tight enough. I passed every other skill until this very last one. I was devastated! I ended up going back to school for something else but I wish that I would have appealed because I felt as though the gate belt was in fact tight enough. Another instructor that was in the room also checked the tightness of the belt, she said that she thought that I should have passed but she didn't have any say so because she was just sitting in and it was not up to her. In my opinion I think you should appeal! Do not let these negative Nancy's for proctors get you down. Honestly I knew when I went to this proctors station that she had a very negative demeanor. I knew something wouldn't go well when it came to her and I was correct. Don't worry about anything this obstacle will not be the deciding factor for your future! See what happens with the appeal. Then go from there! GOOD LUCK with everything! I am rooting for you!

I understand but see this is my 2nd try which makes it one try left and then I would have to drop more bread to retake it. It would be different if I knew i failed like the first time but the 2nd time is just ******** I put my all into this

I would start by trying to contact the person who evaluated you, and ask them for specific feedback regarding your handwashing- is that possible?

my little cents on this...when you test for your CNA, you are evaluated in handwashing several time during the test and at least where I live there have to be two nurses evaluating to give you two chances during the whole test for you to receive a grade. If for example, you washed your hands correctly before starting the first skill and when finishing it, the nurse evaluator should allow for you to skip the procedure itself, you will have to refer that you will do it before and after patient contact, unless you have different patients for your test. I hope you can understand, the bottom is that it is not only ONE handwashing that is evaluated so if they failed you was not for one. I've been there, done that!!

APPEAL!

I understand from your poitn of view but I only had to wash my hands once then after i can just say "wash my hands" and I always said that before i start and at the end perfectly and I only had one proctor

Is it possible that she did not hear you? I say this, cause I see alot of people speak softly, and believe it's the other persons responsibility to HEAR them. And when some people talk, it sounds like mumbling to others.

Another words, just saying it doesn't mean the message got acrossed.

I as well am very sorry this happened. If you decide to take it again without appealing it, next time when you have hand washing VERBALLY say what you are washing . I am going to wash the tops of my hands, I am scrubing the palms if my hands, I am washing in between my fingers, I am washing under my finger nails, I am rinsing my hands off without touching anything like sink of facet head extra. That way they can not miss that you have all the steps down. That is what we were taught to do when doing this in front of the instrutor. Good Luck to you I hope you pass next time, or if you appeal you win.
