Confused-career wise

Nursing Students CNA/MA

I don't think health care is for me, I thought taking care of the geriatric population was going to be a good experience. But being around sick people depresses me, I put on a smile to lighten up their day which makes me feel good. However, I feel helpless knowing that I can't make the job as a career because the pay is low and I have a bad back. I don't think being an actual nurse would be good either, cuz id hate to make a mistake and give the wrong meds. I put so much effort into taking pre-nursing courses and getting good grades in my CNA class.

I like children a lot, so I'd really like to be a elem. teacher but knowing that there are few minority teachers makes me leery of being a teacher. And I suck at math...even 6th grade math (word problems) is confusing..I don't know what to do with my life :(

I can understand your uncertainty regarding career choices, but really needed to point out that there are not "few" minority teachers. (By "minority," I assume you are referring to non-Caucasian individuals.) While not the majority, they are also not few. If this perception is what makes you leery of pursuing that career path, I would recommend that you research further. The regions in which I have lived see a huge diversity in teaching staff and administration at all educational levels. Just something to think about.

Funny! Although elders and sick people are kind of like kids since they can't do for themselves and I enjoy helping them; but I do not enjoy working with kids much. They drive me insane. A few years back I was a substituted teacher for a short while and the kids were incredibly hard to handle. They wouldn't stay quiet or stay in their desk. I have a kid and 4 nieces and one nephew and that's enough attitude to last a life time. hehe

You can do anything you set your mind too. I suck in math, physics and Chemistry but still got an A in College algebra. although I am scared to death of Chem, I plan to take a chemistry class and retake Statistics since I fail it during the summer month. Taking Statistic during the summer was a big no no for me. Live and Learn. I began Anatomy & Psychology 2121 on Jan 13 and feel like I'm already behind in the class. In A&P, we went through 2 chapters already and looked at a lots of cells that we are suppose to know for the lab test. I'll spend the next 4 days studying all day hoping I can pass my test. Keep going, it's hard but you can do it.

Where in the world do you live where there are "few" minority teachers? Maybe you need to move.

I had interned at several school districts mostly in diverse neighborhoods, I thought it was strange to see only 1 black teacher and 3 Hispanic teachers at the school. I'm from LI, NY.

I don't even know what to say here. I think you need to expand your horizons. There are thousands of minority school teachers on Long Island. Long Island itself is hugely diverse and most people live and work on the island. There are 125 school districts to choose from. I'm sure you haven't seen it all.

Follow your dream, there are many colleges locally that will get you your teaching degree. And as a parent of an elementary school child it would be nice to see more teachers that really enjoy and have patience with the little ones, because let's face it just like nursing not everyone is fit to teach either.

I think you really need to FULLY research your options, as well as refocus your outlook; your posts struck me as someone who is isolated in negativity and confusion.

Regardless of what option you choose, understand both pathways are very diverse, requires hard work and energy in shaping one's career.

Sending positive in whatever path you choose.
