First day of unemployment

Never ever did I think that I would be unemployed, as I sit here on my first day of not having a job in over 10 years. It is a true shame that CNS' were not valued at my last job. To all my peers make sure that you make your worth convert into a bottom line. I hope this economy picks up soon. I'm done with my pity party for now...

Wow. You have my sympathy. Did they give you any severance package or anything?

I fear I may be in a similar situation in the not-too-distant future. I've been barely hanging on for the past year ... trying to show my worth... putting a smile on my face when I really don't feel like it ... etc.

Take care.

Oh my gosh - I am so sorry for BOTH of you. Can you teach? Can you do staff development? Case management?

Yeah I was compensated. It is just hard knowing that I put in all of that schooling and WAS making a difference, but not to the "bean" counters who decided who was going to be cut. I have had several interviews, in my state I could technically function as a NP. It is just hard since I live in a fairly rural area and there really isn't much competition. To make it worse, the nursing leadership has decided to replace us with Clinical Nurse Leaders or a Nurse Navigator model. They just don't get it. I think that it is a pretty scary time to be in the hospital right now with no APN's and cutting corners on staffing to meet the fiscal budget.

Is it possible for you to move? My area - central IL isn't much better but maybe look to a bigger city?

I too would like to know what's going on!

It disgusts me sometimes that hospitals in America always concern themselves with making money. It makes me want to work outside of the U.S. I don't like the politics the American hospitals play.

Good luck to you!!!

Why does it disgust you? You work to make money right. Would you do your job for free? Of course you wouldn't. Keep things in perspective, the healthcare system does not operate in a vacume. The money has to come from somewhere. If not from paying patients, then from you in the form of taxes (these wonderful countries you want to work in often have a 50% tax rate).

Thanks for all the support. I did find a job- though I have yet to start. I will be in a CNS in an "NP" role once I get through credentialing and get prescriptive authority from the state.
