Specialties Case Management

I have recently applied for a position with Humana. I have read a lot of negative comments on glass door from previous employees, but not much information on RNs that work for Humana. Can anyone give any insight?

Thanks so much,

Cindy

are you salary or contract?

Sorry about the late response! :) I work for a staffing company hired by Humana(hope that makes sense). Because I am a field CM, I make my own hours, and a FT caseload starts @17 clients/week and caps out around 20. I am PRN right now, so the pay is per client/per week. It's a really nice gig so far

How are things going for the ones that started working with Humana? They are currently hiring for Concurrent review/discharge planning position. Is this like a Mon-Fri 9-5 position? Is it salaried or hourly? Also I only have 2 years critical care experience not sure if I qualify.

I currently work for Humana. I have been working there since April 2013, have not been a yr yet. All I have to say its get ready!!! You will NOT work from 9-5, not unless you are disciplined to walk away, shut it all down at 5pm. I don't know who told you (the other poster) about 7-8 patients. HA HA HA!! They don't give you much insight, because you would probably change your mind. I am not trying to be negative, its a reality. The computer system crashes, or is so slow DAILY, puts you behind waiting for it to stop clocking. This is very frustrating. I work at home, UR for 3 major hospitals and 1 SNF. PLUS of those 3 hospitals, I must go onsite to one of them 3 days a week. And when I go onsite, I must visit the patients, and do an assessment....plus chart review (milliman-robertson) I have access to their computer system, or I can take my laptop in there, which I don't, too much trouble to unhook it from home....then go back and hook it back up to the printer, my large monitor, and the likes. OH yeah, on top of all that, conference calls for rounds 2 days a weeks and other staff meetings. That puts your day behind. Onsite you must document every 3 days, telephonic gotta document every 5 days. Its feast or famine. Caseload can get up to 50 sometimes between those facilities. HCA facilities. Forget being the salaried that you think it is, after its all said and done, I probably make about 3.00/hr. No comp time. You know, you work late, so take some time, for an apt or what have ya. Dosen't work like that. You can be late, but if more than 4 hrs, gotta take 1/2 vacay time. Even after all the hrs you put in. LOLOL I am one that like to be caught up and organized, working from home is diasterous for me, because I will log off and back on again, after a 2-3 hrs. Sometimes I work, 12-13 hrs a day, time has passed before I know it. All I seem to do is walk my dog. Sometimes I think I would rather go into the office, the office is 8hrs away. But being constantly at the puter, really seems like you are right there. They try to include you at the office, but you are disconnected. I have been to the office in Daytona 2 times since starting. I did all my training, 2 wks in Cincinnati, OH and 2wk in Daytona bch, FL. I thought I was going crazy. 1 wk in OH, home for the weekend, 1 wk in Daytona, home for the wkend, back to cinci, home for the wknd, back to dayno, then home for the wkend. that was my training. Then home alone,, to wing it and ask tons of questions as I go, VIA IM'S. Its taken me this long to get really comfortable with processes and workflows. I tell ya, I am getting used to the job, but its not exactly what I signed up for. Medicare is a booga, those turn around times, and having to do letters for denials, its a lotttttttttttttttt!! The correct verbiage, and remaining compliant by CMS guidelindes. Hope this gives you some insight. for the UR part, it will take you some time to get your "groove". The entire processes are chaotic and you wonder, "if done this way, it could be easier" but Humana has their ways. Anyhoo, my eyes are open wide, if ya get my drift....LOL

RN In FL thanks for the feedback! Sounds like more that I could handle at this point. Back to the drawing board : )

Hi Shadow,

I really wish others that work for Humana would chime in, that's just my window, looking into it. I in no way want to discourage you, but that's just the way it is. They "don't" give you a In the day of.... or truly share the amt of stress the job entails. it is a very stressful job. Oh yeah I forgot to mention...METRICS, METRICS, METRICS. Am I closing my cases out in a timely manner, my telephone metrics, saying all of the correct things. Our call are monitored for "...quality assurance purposes.....".

It's gonna be okay, I promise...why don't u re-read my post and tell me who I said I work for...? Not Humana. Maybe u should start a job search to reduce your stress level...

Hey everyone, thought I would put in my 2 cents. I have been working as a care manager for about 4 months. This job definitely has it's pros and cons. Depending who your coach is will also depend on how much you will enjoy your job. Unfortunately I was not lucky. My job is very micromanaged. Everything is monitored, your computer, calls are recorded, your coach will no when you are on the phone or not. Also, your coach and break into your call while your on the phone. Don't ever ever use your phone for chit chat! Remember calls are recorded and your calls will be audited by your coach and a audit team! Everything is based on numbers and percentages, how many members you have called, how long were you on the phone for the week, how many surveys have you completed. You end up having to call more members then the 10 a day they tell you and this is because you will not reach Hal of them in the beginning. Remember they want to to at least contact 70 percent. I usually end up making about 300 calls a month and still don't reach 70 percent. There are a lot of phone and system problems that put you behind. I do not work more then 40 hrs but I know others that do.

This job may be great for others who enjoy talking on the phone. Sometimes it's rewarding but usually all you hear about is how these members don't have money to afford anything. So you refer them for help and then they are told there's nothing that can be done. It's also like telemarketing (in a way). Sometimes members get upset that you are calling....

i think it's great if you don't have a family to worry about and you don't mind being on the phone all day. I think the pay is great for what you actually do. This job is not for me and I will be looking too unfortunately. I feel like this job lacks autonomy that I used to have.

The great thing about this job is I can flex my time if I need too because of my kids schedule or doctor appts. You just have to make up that time during the week. There's no half days. I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Opps, typos.

Hello. Who is the staffing company you work for? I am hoping one is in my area. Thanks!

:cat: I work for an agency that handles the staffing for senior bridge. I have heard a lot of stories about being hired on by various entities, and each one makes me more thankful I didn't hire directly w/Humana

Thank you, I also PM'd you.

Agh! I have A LOT of thoughts about this topic. I've been CM (subcontracting through a local home care agency) since January '14 and it's not going very well. Potentially, it's a great job. What's holding it back? Humana. I probably put too much into my job, but I'm a RN because I have a passion for helping people. That puts me at risk for burn out, and from my experience the employer makes a huge difference in whether or not burn out happens. Right now I am feeling like Humana doesn't give a crap about me or their members. They owe my agency over $2000 in reimbursement for the work I've done and they are denying it. Would love to talk to anyone who cares about this. Please contact me if you've had a similar experience. I'd like to know how many other CMs they are screwing because if it's wide spread I am ready to file a civil complaint. Shame on them!
