How realistic is my plan?

Hi everyone, thank you for taking the time to read my post. Hopefully you can help me clear up a few questions I have about my plans to attend school.

I am just about finished my pre-reqs, and am in the planning stage for school applications.

If at all possible, I would like to continue working full time while attending the Practical Nursing - Alternate Delivery program at Niagara College.

My question is: Is working full time while attending school realistic?

If I am going to end up having to quit my job to focus on school anyways, the Practical Nursing program at Mohawk College would work best for me logistically and financially.

No, it's best if you work part-time or not at all. Don't underestimate nursing school, it is a lot of work.

I completely disagree. It's all about you and the effort you're willing to put in. I worked full time all through nursing school and graduated at the top of my class with a 4.0. You will do as well as you WANT to do. Good luck.

What is the schedule like for the program? I did a night program and worked full time but it was really hard.

As an American, how much do you know about nursing school in Canada?

Our PN education is very different from the US programme.

Working full time is possible and it could be tremendously difficult to keep up with your schoolwork. I know many people who did it. For most of them something had to give, and it often was family time, social time, and/or sleep.

I agree that it depends on your work ethic. I graduated last year after 4 years of an RN program and I worked part time during the school year (Weekends and a couple weeknights if I could) and full time during the summer. I had no summers due to work because I wanted to pay for school myslef and get out debt-free. However, during last year when I did clinical placements fulltime, I couldn't handle working on the side so I took a leave.

It is realistic if you plan to work hard but however many hours of school you attend, you almost have to do that many hours studying too!

Just like all the others i wd say that it depends on you, for me i cdnt hv done RPN working full-time, cos lots of paper writing, research n plus being a single parent. So i decided to work pt while attending school pt as well, cos i had to take care of my son alone. Yet it wasnt so easy. So you must access yourself, do you hv help from family if you already have kids? Are you an average student or learns fast? If you struggle in school before you make the grades then working fulltime its not ideal in nursing school trust me.

I have decided on the full time Practical Nursing program at Mohawk for Sept 2016.

Hopefully I will get to meet some other forum members there.

Hello,

I am now in the same position. I have applied for Alternative Delivery at Niagara, as well as full time days at Niagara and Mohawk. Do you think the decision you made was best? I prefer alternative delivery so I can continue working where I am, but regular delivery is less terms.

I appreciate your input.
