UCLA New Grad Summer 2012 program

U.S.A. California

Hang in there... The UCLA process seems somewhat opaque and idiosycratic. I have heard stories from previous applicants of applications being lost, mysterious withdrawals, and a wide range of technical difficulties. My classmates who have been rejected are amazing applicants (certs, extremely high GPA, extra curriculars, experience). I know it is different when it is you, and I know I could still receive a rejection, but I will try to remember that with so many applicants and so few spots, a lot of amazing applicants will be rejected... We will ALL find work eventually and be great RNs.

So UCLA will send out an automatic rejection email to those who aren't selected for an interview on April 12? I haven't received anything and there's no update to my status on their website or even an option to withdraw my application like someone had mentioned.

No they will not send an email after the references stage. If you don't get a call or email from UCLA after the "reference check" you have not been selected for an interview. Your status will change to "alternate applicant selected" after everyone is hired. Since interviews are conducted in April, if you don't hear anything by the end of April or May, it probably means that they have went with other people. In rare cases, interviews may be conducted until June. Last time they didn't like any of the applicants interviewed for this one unit so they did additional interviews AFTER the set interview dates.. hope that makes sense. This is just my experience from the last app period.

Just as a reminder, these were the interview dates:

ICU, ER - April 12th

Peds - April 16th

Med/Surg - April 17th

Ah, so if we were being considered right now, we would have received additional instructions for a reference check.

We WILL. If you haven't gotten that rejection email. Check your email for the next couple of weeks. I expect to see an email from UCLA soon. The email should look something like this:

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your continued interest in UCLA Health System. An important part of the hiring process is reference checking. You will be receiving an email with a link to enter in your references: 5 total, of which 3 must be current or past managers/supervisors or 4 total for select positions.Completing this reference check is a critical step in the *******UCLA Health System hiring process. In order to continue to pursue your career at UCLA Health System, you will need to follow through with the reference process immediately. If there is any reason why you cannot complete inputting your references within 24 hours, please contact the individual you are working with at UCLA Health System.

I decided to just post a PORTION of the email for all you ansty and curious people out there.

Do clinical instructors count as managers/supervisors?

Specializes in Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, Geriatrics.

Yes, they count.

Also, does anyone think that those personality assessments should be scrapped and NOT used in the application process? I don't feel like an online test should determine whether someone has a "good" or "bad" personality. We should all be treated as unique individuals, like the way we treat our patients. I dunno, that's just my opinion.

Yes! I totally agree the personality assessments should be scrapped. I don't see how the assessments can differentiate our true personalities.

Do you all think our clinical preceptor(s) count as a "manager/supervisor"? I ask because my preceptors know my work and attitude, whereas my clinical instructor was non-existent. I only met her once. Thanks!

I agree about the personality test. I don't think it is accurate or fair, as it may punish you for being honest and reward people for "gaming" it. Plus some of the questions are just inane! Thanks Starghadeer for the heads up on the "within 24 hours" part and that it has to be a "manager/supervisor". Seems VERY time sensitive from the wording. I have give my recommenders a heads up to be ready :)

I agree about the questionnaire. I kept thinking, should I put what I think they want me to put or be really honest and hope that that counts for something.

Well, I got the rejection letter -- no surprise there. Good luck to you all!
