Students in CA wait list

hi, i'm trying to get a poll from students who applied for rn programs in ca and what # you are in "wait list" or if you were able to get in right away?

i applied at sac 08/2008 i was #877 out of 1,112

now 02/2010, i'm #542 out of 1,235 students.

i applied at goldenwest and was denied i was 2 points away from entering the program. i recieved a call from goldenwest and i was 2 points away from being accepted. i cried when she told me, i cried of saddness:cry: and how much work and time i put into each science class for a good grade. i applied at cypress college 08/2008, and was placed on the wait list til 2010. cypress college does not give #s. i just knew i was on the wait list per the letter i recieved. lbcc at the time were not sure if they would take my science classes because i took them at ccc. so, they were unsure but i still applied.

now, 02/2010 i decided to do the lvn program and i start monday! i'm super excitied sometimes we have to pay to get the "license"....after i recieved my lvn license hopefully i can get into rn program 3rd semester! i'm a good student. my gpa is 3.00.

Very sorry to hear about that. IMO california as a whole is very sad. Lottery's are the demise of this state's school system. They are letting people into programs that got C's in anatomy and physiology as long as their cumulative GPA is a 2.8....Scary should be the words used. Scary that this state is letting people like that go into a hospital or medical setting and allow them to work with people. There are people I took classes with in school in programs that couldnt differentiate between a femur and a clavicle. Good luck to you hun, dont give up. You will eventually get in somewhere and probably make a great nurse. If its what you really want to do then just pick your head up and keep trying.

Lottery system is not the demise of the state school system. Many nursing programs are not private colleges/universities and are not allowed to make unreasonable demands for entrance into nursing schools. GPA of 2.8 does not equate to bad nursing. I'd seen in many instances where it is the opposite. Book smart but lacking in common sense/people skills/ communication skills. All that matters is that you pass your boards. 4.0 GPA will not get you a job as a RN, trust me.

People that say that generally dont have good GPA's. And while you might think that a 2.8 is a "good enough" GPA to get into a nursing program, please keep in mind that many of these programs fail quite a few of those applicants while they are in the program. The nursing program at the state level passes a super high percentage of their applicants and they require 4.0 in anatomy, physiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology, biology. If you cant get an A in those classes, it says something. So they go to the city college and here in my town fail at a 40% rate. So while grades may not translate into great nurses, shouldnt we award those that put the hard work in and get good grades? If there is no award for being a good student then whats the point of going to school? Keeping the lottery wouldnt be a bad idea but limit the amount you pick. If there are 50 spots open then pick 15 from the lottery and the rest from GPA and TEAS test score. I guarantee the people with better grades will pass the boards at a much higher percentage than those with the 2.8 GPA.

That is not true about the GPA's. I have lower than a 2.8 and passed my boards (LVN) and am in the 3rd semester ADN Program. One of the previous posts commented that sometimes book smart 4.0 GPA doesn't make a good nurse. Think about this: someone who doesn't have a high GPA but has empathy as compared to a 4.0 who is only in this position for the money.:)

I agree a 4.0 doesnt make a good nurse. But CA schools are failing people that are taking up spots for others because they cant pass nursing classes. It stands to reason that the better grades would translate to less failures in the programs. And lottery just guarantees that you will get more failures than if you had gone with a merit based program.

Also, why does someone with a 4.0 only want money? Some people (myself included) get good grades because whats the point of taking a class and not wanting to get an A in the class? I have pride in my work and everything I do especially in school. I strive for the A in every class I attend. That doesnt mean I want money. There used to be a saying that "hard work will get you where you want to go." Unfortunately a lot of schools in California dont think that way and they are failing a lot of people because they dont want to work hard and put the effort in to doing well.

please...... you are talking about pre reqs for a RN program not NP, CRNA, M.D. , J.D. or anything like that.... its only like 1 year of classes.... 3.0+ is ok... you make it seem a big deal.......i got a 3.48 overall... i just graduated from business law 6 months ago....i got 225 units.....i took all of my nursing pre reqs in one year........grades dont mean nothing honestly.... its all about who YOU know and how you present yourself and sell yourself during an interview........

.. as for the OP congrats and keep on going..... an R.N. is an R.N. bsn -adn same thing.... only diff....... if you want to go to grad school

Congrats to the OP! :yeah: I'm an LVN doing my RN now. Students report having had to wait three years to enter the program, but the LVN just joins in 2nd year taking the place of those 1st year students who washed out of the program. Because there are not as many LVN's there is really no wait. You just have to apply in time.

Where is this so called lottery taking place?!? In San Diego there is no lottery. All of California is not a lottery!

There was just a wait list which really was three years with no exaggeration. Now the public schools have just implemented the point system, including the LVN schools. People who earn C's will not be able to get into theses programs no matter what. There are still plenty of private schools around charging an arm and a leg and even those are hard to get into. :uhoh3:

I have an overall 3.38 science GPA. I got A's in both Anatomy and Micro, but a C in Physio. I worked my butt of in that class, and I can guarantee you the reason for my C was the teacher. Every single student that I was near worked there butt off, and received C's and B's. Getting a C in this class does NOT mean I wont be able to pass nursing school.

Also, sometimes people are just bad test takers. So the reason they may receive a C is maybe because of bad test taking. but that doesn't mean they don't know the information as well as someone who received an A.

And as others had said, book smart does not mean a good nurse.

To Faeriewand. Most of the central valley of CA is lottery based. Emphasis on MOST. Some are merit based. But they are usually private schools. I understand people have test anxiety because I am one of them. I have to take a pill every time I take a test because of test anxiety. I still manage to do just fine.

Hmmm a lottery just doesn't seem fair. It's just very random then as to who is picked to go to nursing school? Wow. I would like to see everyone get in tho that has taken all the pre-reqs.

I had no idea that there are schools in CA that do a lottery. It's funny that just because your school has a wait list you think they are all like that.
