Serious New Grad RN for Corrections

U.S.A. California

Hello All!!!:D

I am very serious about working in a coorectional facility in San Diego or in the surrounding counties. I am not a person to be afraid of "prisoners" or "bad guys." I am going to take my NCLEX this month, yet I am going to graduate with a BSN in July 2010. I am smart enough to be cautious and wise enough to still give the same quality of care that any human deserves; and besides, I was one of those prisoners, I just got a break. I am looking for a little insight on if any new graduate has been hired as a corrections nurse. Any experienced nurses with some insight would really be valuable. Thanks in advance.

me too, I just got my license in december. ill let you know what i find out.

You may want to inquire in our Correctional Nursing forum, here.

Good luck to you and congrats (to you both!)!

I just took the Evaluation Tool on the Corrections website and I got a 65% score (needed a 70% to be eligible). I have to take the Evaluation in 6 months; I need more experience, I reckon. This leads me back to square one. I may as well start working at Burger King. This process is so frustrating:sniff:

I graduated in August and have applied for openings at several facilities without hearing a darn thing. I went to a job fair where was a recruiter from CDCR and was told that at this point in time, new grads have NO chance of being hired in any of the more desirable locations and very little chance in any of the remote locations. This, he said, was due to the fact that there have been a number of significant layoffs of experienced nurses around the state as well as the natural byproduct of the OUTSTANDING compensation that CDCR nurses now get under the receivership.

If you're serious about having been incarcerated then you may be in trouble. I was told by a correctional supervisor that CDCR simply will not hire people who've ever been incarcerated.

Thanks Vincejojo!! Dang!! I am going to get some experience at a SNFor somewhere; by then I will have gained some confidence and will apply again in 6 mos.

I am considering applying. Did the online evaluation give points for having ACLS certification?

One other one for which I'd enrolled was TNCC (trauma). (I don't recall seeing it on the list.) Several of the local EDs listed it on their requirements. There's also a stroke certification that I saw on someone's list.
