Nursing scheduels in california?

U.S.A. California

Hello, I am not a nurse yet and am thinking about becoming one, However, I am not 100% sure on how the schedueling works in the nursing field, If i choose to get 3 12 hour shifts in a hospital mon, tues, and wed, would that be posible? and would I always be schedueld for those days every week? Also, the weekend only shift, I have heard people working 2 12's geting paid for 32 hours and or 2 16's and geting paid for 40 hours, Do they have these weekend only shifts in california? and are they harder to get in to then 3 12s in the middle of the week?

I would love to work 2 12's or 2 16's on sat and sunday and have mon - friday off, What is the chances of geting hired for that in california?

any help would be great, thank you all :)

Scheduling options are unique to each institution. You can not answer this question until you inquire at the different places where you might work. You also need to consider that some facilities offer more than one type of schedule for different positions at the same time. So there are different possibilities.

Doing a mon, tues, wed 3 12's schedule doesn't happen unless you have a lot of experience at a hospital, most new nurses are required to work every other weekend. At my work though, you can work like every sunday or every sat instead of working every other weekend if you choose.

It does depend on the specific hospital, not that many do the WOW (work on weekend) program. where you work 2 12's every sat/sun. & get paid full time. I know Palomar Hospital in Escondido does that, but most of them are part time positions and you work every other weekend.

When you're a new hire at any job, not just nursing, you usually don't get much choice about your work schedule. You just work the schedule that you're given. Since most hospital nursing works 7 days a week, new hires have to work alternating weekends. So, Monday-Wednesday schedules, while always possible, are unlikely for a new hire RN.

it depends on the hospital and particularly the floor. I work at a hospital where we're supposed to work every other weekend. Furthermore sometimes staff is always short and at the times the schedules u put do not necessarily mean you'll get that day. Even special request to be off isnt the same. You got to give the CNIV/nurse manager credit, its hard to do the schedule. If you were gonna schedule 13 days to work in a month (or 12 if you're only 6 and 6), for me out of 13 days I would only get 4 -6 days that I want, the rest would be wrong lol. Hope you pick a good hospital

My hospital would laugh at anyone esp a new grad asking to work Mon Tues Wed. COnversely they would jump for anyone asking to work all weekends. However, there is no bonus involved. 12 hours = 12 hours.

Good questions, as your availability is something important to consider. In my experience, as a brand new nurse year and a half ago, I did believe that when I filled out the schedule, I'd get what I want. Did for awhile, then all of a sudden, was scheduled for one night on, one off, two on. Freaked me out. Wanted the three in a row so the rest of the week and sleep schedule could go back to normal. Discovered the breaking up of days wasn't the worse thing to happen. Gave me some rest. We have to work every third weekend. We also have nurses who work 2 of the 3 wknd nights and get paid for a third. I believe there might be a seniority thing going on here, don't know as I don't have any interest in wknds, too much time from darlings. Keep asking questions.
