I want to start a support thread for us unemployed New Grads in California

U.S.A. California

Hey yall. I want to start a support thread for us unemployed New Grads in California. I've recently lost a lot of my hope and optimism for finding a New Grad position. I graduated in May with my BSN and I've applied for about over 100 positions at this point and I've gotten one interview. The rejection and lack of options has taken a toll on me. I literally made an Excel spreadsheet of almost every New Grad program with information/dates/links in the state PLUS almost every hospital in the state with links to their job listings that I check multiple times a week with notes from their HR dept about if they hire New Grads. Part of what makes it worst is when "outsiders", I know they mean well, mention oh why don't you apply at this hospital or be a traveler or there's a shortage you'll get a job soon, etc. You just want to scream :arghh: I realized the best way to get through this is with the support of those in your shoes. Although we are in competition with each other we can help each other through the tears, hissy fits, and psychotic laughter.:roflmao:

I got the idea for this thread from another thread posted here on allnurses: https://allnurses.com/nursing-first-job/unemployed-new-grad-797292.html

I'm not saying we all need to meet in groups in our own areas (it's nice it comes about). But I want this to be a place for us to vent and support each other. If you're like me and you're so depressed that your mom gave you one of your Christmas presents early (It was a Tweety Bird robe) to try and cheer you up then please come and I have a virtual box of Kleenex and a pat on the back for you.:sorry:

One thing I learned in nursing school is that icebreakers can really do good sometimes so you're welcome to use the following to introduce yourself.

Hey you guys I'm thinking about starting a journal or maybe a blog to write about my job search efforts. I'm hoping I will be able to release stress and frustration by writing it out. I'm also hoping I'll be able help new grads and nursing students as well. I may or I may not. We'll see how this goes...I've gotten a little lazy since I've been jobless.

Same to you and everyone else! I have a new found optimism going in to the New Year and it feels good :)

kenderella89 - only 1 out of the 3 really said for me to call them back once I have the baby. The other 2 were very excited to hire me until I told them I was pregnant then they found an excuse not to hire me. It is very illigal in CA to not hire someone due to being pregnant but I'm not sure the rules in other states.

As for the expense of living in the Bay Area it has been pretty darn hard. I try to really push for phone/skype interviews when possible when interviewing out of state. I flew out once to interview in N. Carolina becasue they had a policy to have applicants shadow on the floor before the interview. I unfortunately had to depend on the financial graces of my family... my mom says she sees it as an investment in my future, that if I ended up getting the job she knew I would pay her back... unfortunately I didn't get the position

I have a feeling 2013 is going to be awsome for us New Grads! Especially now that we have been somewhat saved from the fiscal cliff. I was worried that if we fell into yet another recession we would be pretty darn screwed.

Oh also I was shocked not getting hired by UCSF. From what I could gather, one of the ways these big hospitals weeds down applications is that they look as where you precepted your senior year. So if you did adults then they send your resume to adult floors, peds your resume goes to peds floors. I precepted in Peds Cardiac and work on an adult Cardiac floor. HR routed my resume only to peds departemnts. They already had New Grads working on their floors and hired them up. Unfortunately the ICU I work in will not hire new Grads. The cardiac floor never even saw my resume. If I still don't have a job by their next hiring round, I'm walking my resume out there to the manager. What really chaps my hide is that all the nurses out on the floor kept asking her if she had seen my resume, and unfortunately my manager never spoke up for me... so I learned a valuable lesson, I really need to look out for #1 when it comes to this job hunting stuff.

My babe is due in 3 more weeks so once she's out I'll be applying with a vegance and interviewing in some tight spanks and belly binders ;)

Here's to 2013!!!

2013 better be a good year for us all. I am so, so incredibly tired of being unemployed and not using my dusty RN license.

Hi, I used to live in So. CAL / Long Beach area. Have you tried the VA or Long Beach Memorial Hosp.? Check them out. In person is best.

Do you have a CA license? Good Luck!

Oh yes. Although I have my license I still don't feel like a "real" nurse until I get my first job.

Hello my name is Jassy and I'm an unemployed New Grad.

License type: ADN/BSN in May 2013

Time out of school: 1 year

# of positions applied to date: probably 80-100

Dream RN position: Telemetry

Hospital experience:None, but I plan on volunteering

Where do you live: Irvine

What are you doing now: RN to BSN and spending time with my family

Favorite color: Pink

How you cope with unemployment: My husband is professionally successfully. I just relocated to CA from AZ in late Dec. 2012. In AZ I was having terrible trouble finding an acute care position as a new grad. I am trying to stay positive and prayerful. I never expected that I would experience such a circumstance in healthcare. I am ready to heal the world with my knowledge that I worked hard for.

Has anyone given any thought to working in a nursing home? A lot of family members and friends have suggested that I start there first.

Specializes in CCM, PHN.

I've been employed as a BSN RN in L.A. since 2007. It really is a tough market here, everywhere in CA, for ANY nurses including new grads.

I've done stints in Public Health, ambulatory day clinic, home health, and now I'm in case management. I am on a couple of hiring committees and regularly review resumes and interview potential RNs.

I just wanted to stop by and offer hugs and support. I have lots of good advice and insight into "systems" but only wanna give it if asked :)

Everyone hang in there. Hopefully 2013 will see the market loosen up a bit!
