I don't think it would hurt to contact both, if you can. A manager will be more acquainted with the specific needs of a unit for sure, and I know sometimes managers do have some power in selecting candidates to hire from the application pool to interview. Nurse recruiters will also have selection power, and if you can somehow network with them and get on their good side, they'll more than likely be willing to help you get selected for an interview. They'll also have a strong idea of what the hospital as a whole needs. I was in contact with a nurse recruiter who was helpful in looking for opportunities for me.

Good luck, everyone! I know it's tough, but be persistent! Don't be afraid to network either - I only had two interviews (out of the 250+ applications). I had a great first interview but my lack of experience was what lead me to not get the job. I contacted the nurse manager after finding out that I didn't get the job. I thanked him for taking the time to interview me and asked him for tips on what I could do have a more successful interview and he was kind enough to tell me what I could improve upon. I took his comments to heart, and got a job offer with my next interview. Don't be afraid to reach out and contact nurse managers, nurse recruiters, anyone in a position of power. One of of my classmates actually suited up and went in person to a number of hospitals and asked to speak with a nurse recruiter. She came prepped with resumes in hand and actually got her first job this way.

Looks like I get to graduate too! I was offered a job on a mother/infant unit at a small hospital today. Thanks for the support of everyone in this thread. You can do it, guys!

I'm sorry to hear you didn't get the position. ER is my dream job too. As understandably frustrating and sad as your story is, it did make me feel a little better in knowing that I wasn't alone - I had a similar experience. I like the idea of keeping each other posted on NG programs opening up - I've missed a couple and was very frustrated once I found out I was a couple days late to the application process. I was also feeling very down about the new year. All I keep thinking is, "It's 2013 and I still don't have a job. What is wrong with me?" You're not alone in all these feelings! Thanks for sharing. I'm trying to stay focused on the good things. My relationship with my sister is keeping me going, and my wonderful boyfriend is absolutely perfect. It's getting harder and harder to stay patient, but, we can do this! Is there a way to keep each other posted on opening programs? Should we start a new thread for that?

Man. Moving out of state seems pretty appealing now. I haven't put in apps anywhere else but it sounds like I might have better luck elsewhere. The one manager I interviewed with told me that a lot of hospitals are cutting back on hiring this year because many are waiting to see how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (better known as ObamaCare) will affect their budgets. I hate to be a debbie downer, but it just seems like things are not looking up. For the record, I was not hired because they decided to go with someone who had experience in the field. Someone give me some hope and prove me wrong!!!

Has anyone given any thought to working in a nursing home? A lot of family members and friends have suggested that I start there first.

ExPharmaGirl, since we're in the same position, have you tried speaking with people who have connections to people with hiring power in health care? I've sent my resume out to a few family members throughout the state and emailed a few people who have hiring power. Nothing so far since I just started doing that a couple weeks ago, but you never know who knows who.

I just moved here from VA; had no idea the market would be this difficult. Favorite color: Yellow How you cope with unemployment: I play the guitar and ukulele and spend time with my dog. I also have an incredibly supportive boyfriend who keeps me thinking positively! He's also an RN at UCSD. He is having trouble finding me a job, even with his inside connection. Just goes to show how terrible the market is right now.
