Holy Names University in Oakland

U.S.A. California

Anyone have any reviews about this school? It seems very small and I am having a hard time finding people who have attended, particularly the MSN programs.

Dana1969,

I am appalled by your motives regarding HNU FNP program. I am a current student going on to my third semester at HNU-FNP program and have nothing bad to say about the program academically. Every school has its own little pitfalls, HNU is no different. Its pitfalls in my opinion includes: outdated classrooms, outdated overhead projectors, and unfriendly cafeteria hours... However, those little pitfalls have not stop me from trying to accomplish what I set out to do.

I've found HNU to be a very lovely little catholic university sitting atop of Oakland hill. Its class size for the FNP cohort is relatively small (approx. 35), extremely supportive faculty, decent parking spaces, high-moral and close-knit feel amongst the students, and most of my peers are experienced nurses with unique backgrounds. The program has two clinical coordinators, one of them is our professor; I have not heard complains from any classmates regarding clinical placement.

I have done lots of research prior to attend the program and was skeptical at first. However, if I have to start over from square one - I would still choose HNU-FNP (for knowing what I know about the Program). My advise to prospective students is to do your research - get in touch with current students or recent graduates of the program (many of them are on linkedIn).

Wildnurse, the only motive I have is to relate the horrible experience I had at HNU. There were 110 students in my section, without even enough chairs for everyone. I had to sit on the floor, and take notes on my lap (and there were two other satellite sites which we had to accommodate by moving into/out of the tele-classroom). The assessment class had one instructor and a group of third/fourth semester FNP student volunteers teaching each section of the review of systems.

I wanted nothing more than to find a nurturing environment where I could learn and grow from an RN into an NP. But instead I found a program in complete disarray, and scant resources devoted to the program.

If you had a different experience, then good on you. But for me, when it comes to HNU...buyer beware.

I just applied for Fall 2019 semester and I hope I get accepted. It seems they don’t have much applicants since the enrollment adviser told me that they are only 40% filled. I appreciate everyone’s comments in this thread and hope I get accepted and start. I feel enthusiastic about this FNP program!

Hi there! I am looking into this school for MSN-FNP. It's about 30k cheaper than Samuel Merritt, Western, and the same as West Coast, but that's Socal. Anyway, just wondering if you started? The enrollment person told me he wasn't enrolling for Spring 2021 yet? How competitive is it to get admitted? Apparently CSU schools are very competitive unless you are alumni and I moved to California only two years ago from out of state, so my degree doesn't get me in the door fast enough to any CSU or UC schools it seems.

Also, are there any new reviews of this school? I did find someone on FB that attended and he loved it, but just thought I could fish for new updates. Thanks.

Hey everyone! Has anyone been accepted or knows anything about the GBSN program? I would love to ask if my stats are competitive
