Has anybody heard about this school? They have locations in San Mateo & Concord, CA. The one in Concord is fairly new and I would like to know if it has a good reputation. Thanks.

Boots21,

I am at the Concord Campus in the evening and about ready to finish the prereq class. I absolutly love it there. The teachers are awesome, staff is friendly and helpful and just really happy with the whole experience. There is a lot of studying involved, but it pays off in the end...right now I am maintaining a B average and those that are struggling to pass, are getting help from the director and instructor.

I hope you decide to go there, in my opinion, it is well worth the money and I think you would really like it there.

Best of luck to you

So your not the actual program yet?... Your still doing the one month pre req class??

Specializes in Pediatrics, OB/GYN, ER, Geriatrics.

Boots,

I am a transfer student from a jc so I am just auditing out (sitting in) the prereq class. I have already been accepted to the core program for April, but wanted to refresh my A&P before hand. I have though spoke with other students durinig our breaks that are in the program and everyone has really positive things to say. So, to answer your question, the core program starts April 4th so, no I am not in the program yet, but very happy there as I stated in a previous post.

BTW, the prereq class is not one month long! It is 10 weeks. There is an accelerated class that just started that is one month long, (you go to class Tues - Fri) but do not reccomend it...the people in that class have that look of being totally overwhelmed with all the information you have to learn in one month. You are not only learning A&P, but Drug Dose Calculation and Medical Terminology...that is a lot to learn in one month!

Ok am somewhat confused.. When I went to visit I was told I had to take this pre req class regardless if I had taken the pre req classes in which I did.. How were u able to skip out on them?..

I don't know if my last post made any sense but I have taken all the pre req classes required for the lvn in a adult class.. Would that mean I don't have to take the pre req course at gurnick??

Boots,

I do not know an answer to that question. You can ask if you can take the challenge exam in leiu of taking the prereq class, but I really think that it is a good idea to take it regardless. The class is not strictly A&P...it is a combination of Drug Dose Calculations, Medical Terminology and A&P.

I spent a year at a jc in a LVN program and so they said I did not have to take the prereq's because of this. Although I do have to repeat Nutrition (the lvn program I came from did not have enough classroom hours to get credit for it) when we start Module 1 and then take all the remaining modules to graduate.

I wanted to start in Module 3 (Med-Surg 2 and Pharm 2), but the director said no because she said students who start here from another school do not do well. So, I asked if I could just sit in on the prereq classes to get a solid foundation in A&P, Drug Dose Calculation and Medical Terminology and they said yes. I am planning on sitting in on Fundamentals, A&P 2, and Clinical Lab because I want to succeed at Gurnick.

So, that is probally why you have to take the prereq classes before you start the core. Look at this way though, at least you will pass the class with flying colors!;) There are people in the class that have taken A&P elsewhere and not passing this class. It is really iintense and the concentration is on Physiology and Pathophysiology with a little Anatomy.

Feel free to IM me or email me any addtional questions you might have and hope to see you in July. I go to the evening class, so if you are planning on going then, seek me out. Also, I will be more than happy to help you if you need it once class starts...:heartbeat

Christine2009... My concern on taking the pre req class is that in order for you to advance to the program you would have to pass the class at a 84%... if I don't have to take that class, that would be something I would like.. I would IM you or email you but it seems that I don't have the option?

Boots,

You only need a 75% to pass the class! Who told you that you needed an 84%?

carrington is an okay school, i don't know anyone who has gone to gurnick. i do know people who went to CSI career college (now called blake austin) in vacaville, and they loved it.. good luck :)

I just graduated from Gurnick Modesto as their valedictorian. You will get different answers about the school depending on who you ask. I loved it while I was there. Gurnick Modesto has lots of experienced nursing instructors who are willing to help and spend extra tutoring time outside of class if you need help. Our Medsurg instructor was so commited to teaching, she told us she spent weeks on just one day of lecture. Although you do go out to clinical sites twice a week, majority of your focus will be in the classrooms and its lectures. They do teach you the basic LVN skills such as injections, sterile fields, catherizations, medication administrations, head to toe assessments, etc but their main aim is to get you to pass the Nclex. Therefore, your lecture grades weigh more and you will have hours of homework and studying nightly. There is a test/quiz every lecture day.

Gurnick is a great school but it requires alot of determination and self motivation. You will have to kiss social life goodbye. This includes weekends. Alot of my classmates didn't like gurnick because it was so rigorous that it basically controlled their life. They are very strict on attendence; therefore, you will see a dramatic drop in your grades. You can go from an A to failing really quick.

Gurnick enrolls you into a mandatory Hesi/Nclex prep class afterwards. This is already included in your tuition, that's why it's so expensive. These instructors are trained professionals/managers from places like Stanford University, San Francisco Children's Hospital, etc who will help you to pass your Hesi/Nclex. The plus side is that some of them are the ones who write the actual Nclex questions. They will teach you methods on how to pass the test.

All the people I've kept in contact with from school has passed their Nclex with the minimum questions on their first try. If you are willing to commit and do the work, Gurnick will turn your goal into a reality.
