CSULB Nursing Interview Fall 2011!!!

U.S.A. California

Hello! I'm new to allnurses.com and I hope I can fit in with you guys :D:redbeathe

I'm surprised that no one else has started a thread about CSU Long Beach's nursing interview for Fall 2011! The Interviews begin next week and isn't anyone out there as nervous as I am! I live in Norcal so the long drive down to Long Beach, will hopefully be well worth it!

I have only gathered small bits and pieces of information about the interview for CSULB and if you guys would like to share what you know with me; that would help a lot.

From previous threads on nursing Fall 2010 >> https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-student/csu-long-beach-452445.html

Hi guys, I'm a transfer admit :) I've been lurking on this thread for a while and I had a question, but..

Edit: just realized the answer to my question and don't know how to delete this post. lol

Hi ifonly,

I don't think I'll be hearing back from the MSN program for a while. They stopped accepting applications May 1st, so it might be a while.

Advice:

-Do trimester!! I might be biased, but I was in the both basic and trimester, and trimester was challenging but well worth it to finish early. The summer sessions are split in two, so you focus on one set of classess at a time (mine was critical care/psych). It was hard to not have a summer break, but I found it to be well worth it.

-Take the money! If LB memorial is still offering the stipened, take it! It's a guaranteed job once you graduate (the job market is hard out there for new grads), but be careful!! Lots of my friends ended up being in wards they weren't exactly expecting (almost all went to peds/nicu), but they've found to really like it.

-Be involved! I wish I could've been more involved in nursing school, I think its CNSA? It's a great thing to put on a resume and shows leadership.

-For your last semester, you pick a preceptorship in a ward of your choice. Whether its peds, ob, icu, er, tele, etc....make sure you do your preceptorship in a place you want to end up working!! Lots of students were offered jobs after preceptorship...so if you want to work at a certain hospital on a certain ward, make sure you end up there for your preceptorship, network, and hopefully it ends up being a job.

I can't really comment on professors since they've changed. But I've found pretty much all of them to be pretty fair and are available to help. I remember they implemented this testing system in the middle of nursing school called ATI. That test was 20% of our grade for a class...and the books didnt really cover the test. I don't know if they still use it, but if so, just be ready for it. Thats all I can think of right now. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

How difficult was the program? Did you have a hard time maintaining a high GPA? How were your clinicals?

The stipend program at LBMMC is only available during 5th semester now. Our clinical instructors indicated that it might be phased out eventually. More supply of nurses vs. demands I guess.

ATI exams are still implemented but it's now 25% of our lecture grade.

Hi CA_BSN Student,

Are u a current long beach student? Which semester are you in now? How are the clinicals?

do you guys know if they are accepting transfers for spring 2012?

ifonly - I'm starting 3rd semester next week (psych & critical care). Clinical rotation are mostly at LBMMC, for trimester students, and the facility is pretty awesome. See you guys around during fall semester!

how do we sign up for trimester or basic, where do we see the spots avaliable for

For those who were accepted for fall, did you guys already take pathohpysiology and pharmacology elsewhere and recommend taking it rather than as a first semester nursing student at CSULB?

Little_RN2b - you'll get to choose during orientation. I was surprised during my orientation, that most people wanted basic. Then I found out during second semester that trimester clinical instructors have higher expectations (or tougher, depending on point of view) in general.

CluelessNursingGuy - I took patho & pharm during 1st semester but several of my classmates took them before that. Patho & pharm weren't very difficult at CSULB, but you'll probably have less time to study for N200, which is likely the toughest 1st semester class. My classmates who were transfer students & already have those two classes completed were able to take 1 or 2 capstone classes during 1st semester.

Hey Everyone -

Just curious, do any of you know if LBMMC still offers that contract to CSULB nursing students: the stipend in exchange for 2 yrs of employment? I know they used to... and I know the stipend had then decreased substantially... I was just wondering if the offer still even existed. ha.

I am going to apply for spring 2012... that is if they decide to accept transfers.. my score is 8.764.. which I know is right around the cutoff and probably impossible for a transfer to make it in - but I thought I'd try just incase they magically decide to accept unlimited transfers for spring. (wishful thinking )

I've been on the wait list for SMC's ADN program since last year, and will hopefully be invited to start that program in Spring. I live 8 blocks away from their nursing campus, so if I don't get into LB it just means less of a commute in exchange for a BSN vs ADN.

If I end up not yet getting invited to start SMC's program in Spring, I was thinking of just attending CSULB part time and reapplying for the nursing program in Fall, hoping to be a more attractive candidate, seeing as I will already be a LB student. What do you guys think?

Does anyone have their old N200, N305 class notes I might have a look at?
