Applying for CA license via livescan

U.S.A. California

Published

Hello all

I was wondering if it is possible for someone who resides out of California to actually fly up to California to do the livescan process, even though I have a license in another state (Hawaii for me)?

I don't know how it works with second licenses...I received my first in CA. The livescan process is just a electronic fingerprint and background check...Call or email the BRN.

For out of state people, we need to receive an FBI finger card sent to us; the problem is, I haven't received anything for the past 3 weeks, tried emailing with no response, and tried emailing to no avail. I was thinking about flying up from Hawaii to California just to do the livescan process (which is only available in California) according to the BRN. I was wondering if anyone has done this before?

Maybe try to post a thread on the HI forum?

Good luck!

So I think you just need to look for a livescan fingerprinting place in your area and just take the required CA forms to them. This should be fine. I just moved here from MD and went to livescan in CA, but the paperwork that you need is on CA board of nursing website. The livescan place will give you a copy to mail in with your CA license application. I would do the livescan anyway bc the cards could take up to 2 months to process ihere the livescan is complete within 2 weeks.

also, so livescan fingerprinting isnt available in Hawaii?? We have it on the east coast bc i used it for my md license..... so if hawaii doesnt offer it that may be a problem

Hawaii doesn't have livescan and you need to do the livescan in California.

Just one more question, is it worth it to get it now when I'm broke or should I get if I were to get hired in California?

I'm originally fom CA but now live in TX. I did the Live Scan when I was on a trip in CA and the BRN sent me a letter stating that I had to do the fingerprint card. Wasted $75!! Hope this helps.

I'm debating if I should fly up right now and do the live scan and waste money or wait until I get hired (if that does happen)

You mention that cash is tight now. I would rather wait till you get an interview and/or job offer in hand first. You probably will have to fly out anyways for the personal interview, you can always get the fingerprinting done while in CA then. The fact that you already have a license would be stated in your resume and the people in the hiring decision would see that and know it's a matter of endorsing your HI license over to CA.

No need to pay for a plane ticket to come across the pond and pay for a hotel room, meals and transportation costs etc unless you have a place with family or friends here to save on some of those cost.

Good luck!

I'm originally from California. However, I have been living in Texas for the past six and a half years, and my initial RN licensure was issued by the Oklahoma BON.

While visiting my parents in California in June of last year, I got the Livescan process done at a local fingerprinting place, and mailed a copy of my Livescan receipt to the California BRN along with my endorsement application and fees. I received my California license in the mail about seven weeks later.

I received my California license in July 2011, and although I have been applying for jobs, no offers of employment have come to fruition for me. Therefore, I'm still living and working in Texas because I would feel financially shaky if I were to relocate back to California without a firm job offer.

Why dont you try calling the CA-BON to let them know you still have not received your fingerprint card? I graduated in PA, got my finger print card mailed to me, went to the local police station to get finger-printed and sent back. The whole process took about 3 weeks. This was my first licence, however...not sure if you have another licence somewhere else already and if so, how that would work.. Flying from HI to CA to get fingerprinted is definately not something you need to do. Good luck.
