Anyone going to Modesto Junior College?

U.S.A. California

I'm just curious! I'm just starting (at the ripe 'ol age of 35, LOL!) looking into a career in nursing. I've worked in hospitals and clinics doing medical transcription for years and years, and way back when used to be a pre-physical therapy major (I've taken chemistry, anatomy, biology...don't know if they would count, as it's been several years). I would be attending MJC for pre-reqs and (fiingers crossed) the nursing program eventually and I would really love to have a student's view, how difficult it is to get into the program, any general advice, etc.

Hi waitn4eternity, I can't believe you've been applying for 8 semesters now, that's crazy! I really hope you get in this time! It seems that if someone's been applying for so long they should just be let into the program, or at least put into a smaller application pool. I wonder if switching to a point system would help people like you get in sooner? It would be great if those letters were mailed out by this Friday, but I'm telling myself it might not happen until the week of Monday the 30th. Do you remember when they were mailed out last time? I can't imagine them getting sent out later than that last week. I guess we'll all just have to keep checking the nursing website every day for any updates.

Kawaiinomiko - During the previous years, apps have been mailed out the first week or two in August. I'm not sure about the point system though because I've been trying at Delta CC also, and they have a point system. I got a C in English and that really drives my overall score down, but I get an extra half point for having a Bachelor's:) I'm so excited to be a nurse already though! Have you been studying you been studying your abbreviations and suffixes quizes...they're posted on the website.

Waitn4eternity, thanks for the info about when the letters have been mailed out in the past. That's great that you already have a bachelor's degree, have you thought about doing a nursing program designed for those already with bachelor's degrees? I know they have one at Sac State. It's called the Accelerated Second Bachelor of Science in Pre-Licensure Nursing. Here's a link: Accelerated Second Bachelor of Science in Pre-Licensure Nursing (ASBSNc) - College of Continuing Education at Sacramento StateI know that it's far and may be out of the question due to location, but it's an option that's out there. CSU Stanislaus has one now, too. Here's their link: University Extended Education | ASBSNc Degree Program I know MJC's program is the cheapest, but it doesn't hurt to cast your net wide if you have an advantage like a bachelor's degree already. =)

Can someone help me out. I am a returning older student who has lost their job 2 years ago and need to get into an entirely new profession. Since I graduated from MJC in 1985, I have too many units, and MJC will not allow me to take classes, since they put me at the bottom of the list, even if I register early. That is just the way of it. In 2009, they changed the Math prereq and I need to take the Math 90. I took Math 100A at CCC, but never took the Math 100B for various reasons. Is there a way around math 90. I am looking for online courses through other community colleges in Calif. Can anyone save me hours of research and frustration, bc I am not getting any where. With the canceling of classes and closing of schools, you would think they would allow AP to test out. MJC does not allow that at this time.

I was going to apply to Modesto JC but I ended up getting accepted to CSU Stanislaus' BSN program for this fall. I did hear that Modesto JC had a good program though. Best of luck to you all!!!

First off, congrats Nurse2b209, that's so exciting to get in! Best of wishes and have fun in your program! =)

Hey JulieAnnB, I feel your frustration. I've been working on these prereqs for about five years now and I know how frustrating it can be. I've been on many a waitlist and have had to ask to be added to classes. Sometimes you get lucky and are able to get in, sometimes not. If I were you, I would go see one of the general counselors for guidance. After the nursing program application chaos is over, I would also recommend talking to someone in the nursing office for some help. There may be some online accredited schools that you could take an online math course through, but I'm not sure what their costs would be. I don't believe there's a way around math 90, unless you've taken a higher level math class or scored well on an AP exam for Calculus or Statistics. Maybe you could ask a counselor if a regular statistics class would cover the math requirement? Wouldn't hurt to ask. Don't give up, there's always a way! =)

@kawaiinomiko thank you.

Anybody hear anything else about when letters will be sent out? I wonder if my application even got accepted!

Hey ronneep,

Nothing yet I keep checking on the website but no specific date on notification letters being mailed just still seeing "...expect to mail letters week of july 30th" Im getting anxious myself!

I'm hoping they don't get mailed out any later than next Thursday August 2nd. If not, then I'll really start getting anxious myself. Here's hoping!

It seems fairly safe to assume they'll be out next week sometime. Of course I'll be out on a pack trip & completely unreachable the whole week ;-) coming here and seeing everyone else in the same boat does make the waiting less lonely & helps keep me sane.

Speaking of keeping busy & staying sane, I've also been going to khanacademy.org and brushing up on algebra for the TEAS. If you guys haven't been to that site before I highly recommend it! It's basically a collection of free tutorial videos on a wide range of subjects, I used it a lot for micro & physiology. There is so little time between notification and start of the semester that if I do get in, I want to already be preparing for the TEAS and not be caught off guard!

Thanks for sharing the link, it's always good to be prepared just in case. =) Looking forward to getting that letter, good news or bad, hopefully sometime this week! =) Good luck everyone!
