What order to take prereq's in

U.S.A. Arizona

Going through Rio Salado. I have some college courses behind me, so I'm left with only these requirements: CHM 130, BIO 201 (A&P1), BIO 202 (A&P2), BIO 205 (Micro). I might also have to take the English stuff; waiting on transcripts before I can talk with an advisor on that.

I had a year of high school biology (15 years ago) so technically I don't *have* to take BIO 156 as a prereq to A&P. Would it help me immensely if I did though or could I possibly wing it? I don't want to take it if it'll do me little good, but if it's going to greatly help me out with A&P I'll take it first.

Also, I'm determined to take NO OTHER COURSES concurrent with BIO 201/202. Chemistry will also be a very tough one for me; always has been and I'm not sure why. BIO 205 really has no prerequisites to it, iirc, except Chem is recommended.

So......I'll likely start off with Chem (and/or Bio 156 if you all recommend it). Where should I go from there?

I'm not a nursing student yet (only because i didn't have my pre-reqs) but if i were to give advice i would say to make sure you take your pre-req's. I am on hold for another year just because i didn't take chem my freshman year. So now, I am taking chem, chem lab, A and P ( + lab), and bio lab all at once. Just make sure you have your pre-reqs and it doesn't hurt to take the supported classes (mine is Microbiology and A and P). Keep up your GPA and i should see no problem as to why you shouldn't get in. (After you take your pre-reqs, you just try to get as much nursing courses in as possible). Good luck.

I've heard that taking Chemistry and Micro will help out when you take A&P because of all that goes on with the body that you will have to learn.

I didn't take BIO 156 before I took A&P. I tested out of the class. The first few chapters in your A&P book will cover the topics covered in BIO156 if you ever need to refer back to them.

From my experience two years ago, Rio would not let you get out of Bio 156 without taking a formal test. No way you could wing it after 15 years....

I did bio156, chem and psych at the same time. I'd done all the general pre-reqs earlier, like my humanities, english and math, plus testing out of that reading class, CRE or whatever it's called.

Then a&p 1 and nutrition at the same time. Afterwards, A&P 2 and micro while I was in block 1 and 2 at the skill center doing my LPN.

This is how I took mine (not including the basic classes I took with them)

Physio

Microbiology,Human Growth & Development, Inorganic,Organic and Bio-Chem

Anatomy, Stats

(took nutrition a few semester back)

It was hard to take Physio without having anatomy background, but having taken medical terminology helped a little, plus when anatomy came along it made is seem WAY easier.

I would not recommend taking anatomy and physio together unless you are not workin...you will be studying a lot, and you may not even been in the same systems in each class which can get confusing.

I assume that the BIO 156 is the same prereq as it is for my school-cell cycle, layers of the skin, and stuff like that. I winged the test having never taken the class. I always recommend people try, because it shaves off a whole semester of waiting. I went to the school library and checked out the book of file for the class. I reviewed the end of chapters and then took the test. If you can memorize easily, then it will be easy.

A&P is a together class. I don't think you can split it up. It is 2 semesters long.

But since that time, they've changed the nursing program. When I went into Mesa CC to speak with an advisor in December, they hadn't completely finalized the new program yet is what I gathered. The advisor gave me the courses she thought would be required and when I looked them up for prereqs, I learned there were a few additional courses I'd have to take in addition to the ones she gave me.

Now though, the requirements for those courses have changed. Stuff that was previously required is now only recommended, sometimes not even that. If I wanted to I could stagger the courses in such a way as to complete them all within two semesters. The old way I was looking at four semesters.

I faxed my transcripts over this morning so we'll see what they have to say.

I've taken BIO156, BIO201, BIO205, PSY101, HCC145, and my humanity classes at RIO. BIO156 is helpful for those of us who have not done a bio class at all or in many years. The key things I think they want you to get out of bio156 that is helpful in bio201 is the Kerb cycle, protiens, celluar makeup etc. In BIO201 they touch on those things a little bit but not as in depth as bio156. I don't know you can try and test out of bio156 but if you fail the test just know it helps you a little bit in the over all understanding in bio201 and even bio205 a little bit. Far as chemistry yeah they touch some chemistry aspects in bio201 and a little in bio205 but I have never had a chemistry class in my life and I did just fine without taking the CHEM class beforehand. BIO205 is a fun class and you can take that in any order it really does not matter much where/when you take it. The labs in BIO205 are pretty easy and the reading is easy going. Now bio201 has huge/long labs and a bit more reading. It is a time consumeing class for sure. I totally aced psy101 that is a really easy class just got to be good at essays. HCC145 is a snap....just study all your quizes because they use all those questions in the midterm and final. One thing I hate about RIO and I don't know if the other schools do this but it doesn't matter if you did all your homework and did well on them....your grade all comes down to your midterm and final. You got to make a 60% on both tests. So, the little bit of your points in homework wont help your overall grade at all. PTF hours of homework for nothing.

I found that A & P 2 was my hardest course, but the most interesting. Once you get it, you really start to learn.
