WARNING: Phoenix area is a TOUGH market for new grads

U.S.A. Arizona

I've come across several postings fairly recently from new grads wanting to move to the Phoenix area and I want to make them aware that the job market here is very competitive. Unless you are an experienced nurse, have great luck, or a strong hospital contact, new grad hospital positions are very hard to come by. I know several that have had to leave the area to find jobs.

I'm not trying to be a downer, but in this economy Phoenix is NOT the place a new grad wants to be.

When I was a new grad I moved to San Antonio, Texas. Once you get rid of that label of a "new grad" jobs open up to like crazy! Good luck to all of you!

I know hospital jobs are hard to get as a new grad, but I have a question. It is not possible for me to move, my husband has a job that he will be at til he retires (another 10 years minimum, 27 years maximum). So if when I graduate I cannot find a hospital job (if I decide that's even what I want) and I get a job in rehab or LTC or something along those lines, will hospitals then consider me after I've had that job for 6mo-a year? Or do hospitals prefer hospital experience only?

I guess my question is really do hospitals look at any experience as experience or do they want specific hospital experience?

I went from LTC to hospital. Things like a BSN and certifications help tremendously.

Ok cool, have you seen any changes since the merge? Good, bad, or indifferent? Do you like working there?

Inside of the hospitals it is generally the same. Anyone salaried has had their world rocked though.

Lots of instability in the leadership right now, but where is that not true?

Does anyone know if Abrazo is hiring a lot of new grads? Ive seen over 50 postings that they " will consider new graduates". But has anyone actually had any luck getting hired?

I work at banner as a PCA and I have seen several cnas and pcas transition into a nursing position at banner quite easily. I do believe having a good employment history with the hospital helps, but there are also some new grads at my facility who have no prior experience outside of nursing school. So who knows really?

I was offered a job at Banner Boswell! Do you have any info on that banner hospital?

I have never been to that facility, but i feel banner in general is a great place to work. I have had nothing but great experiences. The benefits are good and there seem to be many learning opportunities even for cna and pca.

ashley037 would you mind telling me what Banner you work at in a private message? I think you and I will be attending school together and I also work for Banner. Thanks!

I am a new grad and also looking for a job in phoenix area, could someone give me a lead..

Boy do I feel old! I graduated from MCC with the two year and I remember recruiters from hospitals meeting with us, offering us jobs in pretty much any department, with sign on bonuses.

I wanted out of Phoenix so I applied and got a job at the hospital in Flagstaff, but due to a few family circumstances, ended up declining the offer, moved to Colorado and very quickly got a job in hospice care.

Sorry to see so many nurses struggle.. hang in there !

I've heard that Banner may be hiring ADN nurses, does anyone know if that's true? If so do they HAVE to be enrolled in a BSN program?

i work for banner now and you do not NEED your BSN and you do not NEED to be enrolled. But being enrolled does help you get the job over someone else. Try applying to a med surge floor instead of ICU or PCU you are more likely to get that
