The Sad Truth

U.S.A. Arizona

No one is hiring. There is a hiring freeze state wide. Arizona state government cut their funds this year to the hospitals. The hospital I work at, AZ state isn't going to give us the yearly 10 million dollars to compensate for all the illegals and unisured that come into our hospital. Next step is to stop treating illegals unless they are unstable like back in 1993. It's very annoying. Future doesn't look bright. We got an email yesterday from our hospital president saying there is a hiring freeze and there won't be any raises for at least one year. George Bush and Friends really did a number on this country didn't they? So did American Greed. I saw an article the other day saying that illegal alien crossing over the border has been the lowest since 1973. When illegals stop crossing the border then you know it's bad.

Is it really statewide? Northern Arizona Healthcare is recruiting at a number of job fairs in other states, from what I've seen; do they not have the jobs to back it up?

You know this recession is not the result of George Bush right? It is the result of financial plans set into motion way before his term as president, all the way back into the 80's when Reagan was president. It has everything to do with the credit industry and nothing to do with the President. It is the banking system that has screwed us royally! They started making terrible loans to unworthy creditors and now we are paying for it. Are wars taxing? Yes, but this goes way deeper than just war debit. War debit is not the cause of our country losing its economy, outsourcing is. We stopped making US products and out sourced to China and Honduras. Now they are profiting from corporate out sourcing and we are flailing.

I do agree American greed has paid a huge role in this situation! As a society we are afraid to work hard, everyone just wants a handout. It is such BULL **** for those of us who are responsible and pay our bills and make good decisions, why should we foot the bill for all those idiots who over extended themselves. I'm so tired of the american attitude.

As far as hiring shortages I can only hope that buy the time I graduate I will be able to find a job. Relocation is not an option, but I am going the BNFP so hopefully my chances will be good once everything is said and done. The truth is even if I can't find a job after graduation I will at least have my license and eventually this will all bounce back. It could just take 10 years. YIKES!

Fact is the economy is frozen right now. Unofficial (or official!) hiring freezes exist in almost every industry. Good luck even getting a job at McDonald's - it's not happening.

I'm hoping that as soon as the stimulus package is passed, the frozen economy will begin to slowly move again. Not so much because the stimulus package will have actually done anything yet, but because there will be a sense of motion and something being done about the economy. I hope I'm making sense.

For my fellow nursing students, look at the bright side. There's never been a better time to hide out in academia, LOL.

I'm not sure, but I read a while back that many hosptials had purchased thier ad space a while back and still had advertisements but no jobs.

I would call the hosptial directly or send an email to be sure. But, it Flagstaff is the only one hiring then Az is in trouble! I can't afford to live up there and I'm sure many other's can't...

To the OP...it's hard times, isn't it? No raises, cutting back on OT, layoffs, hiring freezes...no new blood coming in...

I too hope this trend turns around. I don't like it when TPTB are in control of our careers.

I left a message for a recruiter at a large hospital on Wednesday and received a return call and an email on Friday. I have a lot of experience, graduated in '95. There will always be hiring when needs cannot be met internally. The thing is you need to fit that need. If you have enough experience to begin working with virtually no orientation you are really no different in cost than a current employee. I can basically go right to work and give a return on my time even if the compensation is higher than a newer nurse. There are positions for ICU, ED, OR, BH, cardiac cath, etc. and even med/surg if you have strong clinical experience. For new nurses, get into a SNF, LTC, rehab or whatever you can to start building a resume. Better to have some nursing experience than nothing.

You know this recession is not the result of George Bush right? !

Bush filled career positions at the agencies that oversee the financial industry such as the SEC and US Department of Justice with political ideologues just like "you're doin' a heck of a job Brownie" at FEMA. There was a terrible law signed in '99 that repealed restrictions on banking that set the derivatives market into a money grabbing free for all but Bush was in charge since then. He and his administration bear a great deal of responsibility for the unbound greed of the housing bubble, CDO/CDS (derivatives markets) frenzy.

Ya, I talked to my friend who works for Northern Arizona Health Care and he told me yesterday that they have a hiring freeze right now. They are increasing their nurses patient workload and calling off nurses at least once a shift. Some of the nurses are refusing to take that workload because it's unsafe.

. They are increasing their nurses patient workload and calling off nurses at least once a shift. Some of the nurses are refusing to take that workload because it's unsafe.

You know what's sad? The market is so bad right now that even if all the nurses refused the unsafe assignments there will be plenty of nurses willing to fill the gaps.

That's what I mean about not liking other people being in control of my career. The big boys up top have the upper hand right now...

So are they hiring nurses in Mexico? just kidding. I hope it doesnt turn into people not getting care (illegal or not) I think this will turn around a bit. Although it will be slow going. It took a while to get into this mess and it will take a while to come out.

One thing I have noticed is the amount of nursing students upset at waiting a month or two to find a job. I guess this is because they do not have a lot of work experience? I would like to say welcome to the rest of the world. Healthcare has enjoyed high demand for a while. In most industries the average wait to find a job is 2-3 months in a fair economy.

We will get our turn at some point. Many of the older nurses will eventually retire or move onto less demanding positions. We just need to use this lull to gain new skills and training. Our time will come.

Many students aren't waiting a month or two, but many months or a year--and how are they going to gain new skills and training when there aren't any jobs?

I hate to say it but the 'stimulus package' that the new president is trying to pass will only make things worse. We can't count on it to make things better. A good analogy of it is if you owe $10,000 on credit cards and you borrow $10,000 to pay off those credit cards, you're not only not out of debt, you're further behind than when you started. We're just borrowing against our children and grandchildrens' futures.

As for no jobs out there, it is getting pretty bad. The best thing you can do is to try and find any job and then hope in 6 mo or so you can transfer to a different area internally. Jobs that are opening up are getting filled by experienced nurses, or are filled internally. I"ve been trying to get a friend of mine a job at the hospital I work at for over 6 months with no luck. I TG everytime I go to work because I'm making great money, love my job, and love the people I work with. I'll do everything in my power to keep my job right now...no complaints here.
