Slow times at hospitals?

A question...I have been reading these forums for a long time..My husband and I have moved from CA to FL and back to CA...We really don't like Southern CA...so much has changed and we are hoping to move to the Phoenix area...last move I ever hope to make. My question is one that I haven't seen discussed much here...maybe because you already live there and know the answer...do you have slow times where you are sent home during the year? I know in FL...we were busy during snowbird season, then, very slow. (I am a RN and work in surgery).

We have been spending holidays and long weekends in AZ for a couple of years now and still really like it.

Any assistance would be appreciated from this great group of nurses!!!!!!!!!

We slow down in the summertime and get really busy in the fall through the spring due to RSV. Summertime seems to be traumas, spinal fusions, and near drowns....fortunately we've had very few cases this season. :yeah:

we have snowbird season as well =P phoenix is a huge city with a stable population so i don't see why it would get really slow, maybe just not as busy as snowbird season.

My wife works at Sun Health which is surrounded by snowbird communities of Sun City, Sun City West, and Surprise. In the summer the census is lower; but it is gangbusters the rest of the year.

It's always slower in the Summer.

We just had a census of 2 in our ICU for a while. We are busy beyond comprehension in the winter. In summer, we get a few rhabdos, few traumas, some regular stuff.

And usually there are more than enough people who volunteer to be sent home (like me!).

One of our neighbors drove a bus sized motorhome out for the winter/spring and left the home vacant otherwise. I think fuel costs changed his mind on the annual trek as he put the home up for lease/sale this time. We'll see how the snowbirds are coping this winter.

We always get slammed during the summer. It's busy busy! It just depends on your unit.

More an economy based prediction but I bet a couple of hospital types will suffer; the cherry pickers and the level 1 trauma. Hopefully the slow down is short lived.

I would think if you work surgery you won't have much of a problem with some areas slowing down. Again it just depends on what area you work in. L&D seems to always be really busy in the summertime, so I'm hoping for lots of overtime. I know my friend who works PICU said it's steady not slow, but in the winter it gets really busy since it's RSV season etc.

Either way you shouldn't have any problems finding a job here, you just have to be a little aggressive in the job search since many recruiters are very slow to return calls (approximately 6 weeks or so after you turn in your application).
