Are you able to get the PALS certification prior to becoming an RN? Or, do you have to be an RN to take the course?

No you don't have to be an RN to take it. There are lots of people in those classes who aren't RNs, like Physcians and paramedics.

I took NALS when I was a PCT.

Thanks CardiacRN2006! I am still a pre-nursing student, but want to work in Peds or the NICU, so was wanting to get the certification prior to getting a job, as I know this is required in order to work in a Peds unit or NICU. Thought it would make me more marketable. Not getting it immediately, but just trying to get my ducks in a row.

I thought the same thing. I wanted to get ACLS prior to graduating to give me the edge. I didn't do it, and honestly, nobody even asked about it.

They did ask me about my grades in nursing school, and I had to submit transcripts.

So I'd focus on your grades more than the PALS. It's easier with a little experience or knowledge, so wait until you've at least finished up your peds rotation once you get into nursing school.

pals & acls can be kinda hard if u havent yet studied the stuff thats covered on the tests, even if u have the book, its not very helpful LOL.

i thought about doing the same thing but ive decided to wait.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I know I have a long way to go before I am actually there, but was just curious. I like to go onto the hospital websites to see what positions are available, and the NICU and Peds openings always have the PALS. So, was just curious. Definately not doing it right now. Just trying to get the best grades possible! For sure! I know that is VERY important.

PALS-Pediatric Advanced Life Support

NALS-Neonatal Advanced Life Support (might be called NRP Neonatal resusciation protocol. I got the cert many years ago...)

I'm not sure why they post those on the job applications, I noticed that too when I first graduated and was looking for a job. But no one ever asked me about it during the interviews. After I started working, then it was offered to take those classes, and you had up to 6 months after your start date to get certified.

Also, if you take it once you start working, you don't have to pay for it, as the employer usually pays for it.

Hi Everyone! I just graduated and passed my state boards to be a CNA!!!! Woohoo! Is the PALS and NALS certification the same as having your BLS card? If not where can I go to get these classes and be certified? I want to be certified in EVERYTHING now!!!! LOL
