MCCDNP Wait List... a new strategy

"Boru, you have not been placed"...

I'm going to change my user name to the above message!

Why can't we rank all choices (in this case 13) vs only 5 choices? No one on the top of the list would be passed over this way and everyone would at least have a "choice" when our time came. If you are towards the top of the list and you choose the schools that many others have choosen, then you may not get selected... and that's not fair - you've done your time.

I would drive to Phoenix, Avondale, Sun City, Glendale, Mesa, or Scottsdale to get this program done... would even do it online at Rio.

We should at least be able to see our "place" in line... we have to plan our lives around it.

Here is the link for the placement board in case any of you don't have it:

I very much agree with that, and wondered why they never did it that way. I'm willing (and will be) making the drive to a further college, but its worth it!

And its definitely a pain not being able to know exactly where you stand on the list. You can get an idea from whiteboard, but not exact. I don't see what's wrong with just giving everyone a placement number.

I don't believe they can give you a placement number because it's not a "true" waitlist. This is primarily because of the 5 choice option. You can have a relatively low number, say 200-300, and still get passed over all because your 5 choices were the same as the ones ahead of you. Meanwhile, there will be those in the 500-600 range that do get in because they made less "popular" choices. This is what happened to some of those with a June/July 07 timestamp. Mine is Oct 07... but should I put my life on hold on the "chance" that I could be next?... the truth is that there really is no way of knowing.

If they allowed everyone the ability to rank all of the choices from 1-13... and everyone did that (some would still choose a few "no choice" options), then it would be simple - if you were below a certain number then you're assured placement one way or another. You could receive a waitlist number and know that you were going to get at least one of your choices... and about when you would get in... and we could all plan our lives around it.

This is by far the most fair system. I do realize there are some people that could absolutely not put down certain choices or, because of distance, could not attend certain programs. But I would be willing to bet that most would pick 10-13 choices and take what they could get, buckle down and make the drive, rather than possibly wait another year to get in. :typing

Thats the first time I have seen that list and look at all those employee spots held spots without placements. Wow do they really really have that many people who already work for these places that are "ready" for the program every term? Guess its just the deal they get for the clinical spots.

People who have already put their applications into play in the system often apply for jobs with those companies for the sole purpose of getting one of those spots.

that's my strategy also... it's really the best way to get selected...

The thing that really stinks is that they are not just employee spots, they are employee, employee spouses and employee children. I was so thrilled when I heard this. I asked a couple of friends to adopt me, even my husband's ex-wife. :) Also, in order to get one of those "employee" spots, you actually have to have worked there for six months. I can understand employee spots, but family too? I mean, get real, we are all going to be waiting a decade to get in if they keep this up!

The employee spots do not take away from community college slots. The affiliated programs serve to add additional slots. If the programs did not exist, there wouldn't be any extra slots for non-partnered students because the hospitals pay the costs for the additional clinical instructors & rotations.

What you said makes sense and thanks for clarifying. However, I have a question as to why they removed all but 10 public spots for spring from JCL and took all 50 (public) slots for SCC away for employee only?

Some of the hospitals have agreed to take on larger than normal cohorts in order to help trade off w/ the community colleges; Abrazo & JCL are the ones I know of. Again, these cohorts wouldn't even exist if the hospitals weren't coughing up the dough.

As for SCC, not all schools start their nursing programs at the same time (ie not necessarily every fall & spring). I must admit that I never really invested time in learning about SCC, but I understand that Scotsdale Healthcare is contracted with them. It is very possible that the slots you were looking at were allocated for Scottsdale Healthcare to begin with in order for them to conduct a cohort.

Thanks for the information. I can see how frustrating everything can become.

Well... I think I have exhausted known to man when it comes to a unique approach to getting in any sooner than Fall of 2009. The problem is, I can't really uncover one that hasn't already been tried, beaten to a pulp, and placed into the "beaten-to-a-pulp idea museum".

Here is a list of the things I have investigated or tried, but have found that it will not work for me.

1) ASU BSN,won't work since I missed the cutoff, and need too many pre-requisites that do not really match what MCCCD's are. I have been waiting in preparation for the MCCCD program, not a BSN program.

2) Grand Canyon Univeristy- Still need more pre-requisites, and will not be able to get them done by their cutoff. One big reason is that MCCCD allows its applicants to use HS chemistry. No one else seems to want to. That goes the same with Patho. Everyone requires it, EXCEPT MCCCD. Dumb dumb dumb. I would pick GCU in a heartbeat. I honestly would. I love that school.

3) Trade schools- Ethel Bauer, Apollo, Chamberlain, etc. Nuff said. I would move to attend a college in a different state before I spent that kind of money for a "maybe". Their NCLEX scores collectively are a nightmare.

4) Move away like I mentioned in #3. I asked my wife. She said no way. I would leave tomorrow- I wouls seriously just walk away and start fresh... I am not a big fan of Arizona- the air is bad, the drivers are morons, it is hotter than Africa, people here are too laid back and nothing ever gets done (MCCCD problem for example), and heck the dirt is even bad for you here... Valley Fever. I never even knew what that was until I moved here. My ets can't even enjoy it outside- my dog has Valley Fever. I have great friends, a great family, a great job, but sorry AZ natives... that's my :twocents:. It just seems like people here don't fix problems, find excuses not to, and have to go through someone else to get something done. Why is that? They need to quit blaming and just fix the issue. Oh, I let of my steam on this one.

4) Banner Nurse Fellows- I have submitted my application 3 times, and have not even been invited in for an interview. I would love to know what I am doing wrong so I don't keep wasting time.

5) Volunteering- I wanted to get in as a volunteer so I can apply to get in through JCL or Banner, but I missed the cohort application deadlines for that.

Sooooooo.... if I have missed something, please let me know. I am really asking for help here.

For now I have decided to just take a match class and a critical reading class, and then retake the NET to bolster that score while strengthening my GPA. Then in January, I am taking Patho, then Chemistry if I have time. I am still hoping, with my Oct 22 date stamp, to get in through deferals. The whiteboard gave me a good idea about where I might be on the list now. I have been waiting for at least 1 year. So if I don't get in through deferral, then it looks like Fall 2009 no matter how I slice it, unless I get an interview call from Banner.

Sorry abot the long post. It is just that I am sooooo tired of being told "NO... You can't do it."
