Job Search-New grad

U.S.A. Arizona

Ok, new grads...give me the lowdown. :nuke:

I can't believe I will graduate in a few months but I am. Don't know if it is smart for them to let me out, but....

I am confused about the job search. I asked my instructor how you are supposed to find out about an organization before you interview and she said you just apply online and then ask all your questions in the interview. But new grad training is very important to me so it would be optimal if I could find out what that is before going to an interview since if the training is non-existent, I don't even want to appl there.

Other than cruising the websites (limited info there), how do you find out what a hospital has to offer WITHOUT getting dressed up for an interview first. Interviews are stressful and I only want to go to them if it is really worth my time and energy. Do I just start calling around and talking to nurse recruiters? All I know is what I have seen in clinicals. It is especially hard because I am not sure on a specialty so I am pretty much wide open.

What did you all do? if you have any info on hospitals, I would appreciate that too. I think I have a good idea about St. Joes and Banner but what about everywhere else?

Thank you!!!:specs:

Specializes in NICU.

Yeah most of the valley hospitals start about the same ..... they obviously have to be competitive. So that's why I say factor in benefits too. Also factor in having to float to other units. That's one reason why I was turned off by Banner NICU, because I didn't want to have to float to other floors. But if floating doesn't bother you, then it wouldn't be a big deal. Lots of things to consider.

I would like to know how long did you have to wait to recieve your license I have waited for over two weeks and still nothing has come thru. Does it normally take 4 to 6 weeks.

Specializes in Pediatric ICU.

".......If you are in block 4 now, apply now. It is not too early!...."

I cannot believe that I should start applying for jobs now??!!! I'm starting block 4 in August and it just seems so early. I have lots of ideas but to actually apply for a job now, you really think so?? I have a friend at Banner Desert and a friend of a friend at Chandler Regional....I guess I should give them a call huh? :uhoh3:

It's good to line up interviews early in that last semester. In our class most everyone had offers by mid semester. That's the leading cause of senior-itis. ;)

Specializes in Cardiac.

Hmmm, that's weird. I took the NCLEX on a Tuesday, and had the paper license in hand via snail mail on Friday.

2 weeks is a long time...

Have you thought about Banner Mesa? They're switching to BAnner Gateway in Sept, right off of US60 and Higley. Depending on where you live that might be easy to get to.

I can't believe we'll be starting block four in a couple of months. Actually, I'm starting block four next month, I'm taking NUR285 through Rio so I'll just have one class and my clinical during block four. I'm already externing so hopefully I'll get hired on in L&D when I graduate. I'm not sure when I should apply, they haven't really told me anything yet, but they did say for me to apply when they open the extern II positions. One of the girls that started externing with me just graduated and was offered a position as an extern II until she takes her NCLEX.

It's pretty exciting, it's been a really long road. I'm already trying to line up daycare etc. for when I'm working full-time!! I know the time is going to fly by!

Take care

Specializes in Acute Care Psych, DNP Student.
MMC would be a good one to look at too. I know most people think "UGH .... County?!?!" But they have an AWESOME retirement plan ..... you can't beat it and won't find anything close to it. The people there are great too and they have a pretty good orientation program. The starting pay now is $22.73, so obviously not as much as others around the valley, but with the great retirement plan, it might even out and be worth it.

Good luck!

I'm in Tucson, so I'm guessing that you are talking about Maricopa Medical Center? I went to MCC's website, and I couldn't find any retirement benefit info. I'm thinking it's probably through the Arizona State Retirement system? Meaning an old fashioned pension?

If so, I'm thinking that would really be worth less in hourly pay.

Yes, Maricopa Medical Center. And yes, they have ASRS, which is AWESOME!

A friend of mine got hired at Scottsdale Osborne as a new grad working in telemetry. She got hired on the spot at their job fair and starting pay was $26 I think. She has been there for about 18 months and has already gotten 3 raises. She loves it there even though it's kind of a long commute from Queen Creek.

I'm looking for telemetry or med/surg - so I can go just about anywhere. And I really want weekend nights. Money and hours will determine where I go.

Hello. I am not sure if you are married or have children? But if you can move 2 1/2 hrs away, Yuma Regional Medical Center is always looking for help. They seem to have a higher starting pay as well...

Good Luck!
