I saw on the news last night that there going to lay off 334 people in just AZ.

yes i saw that too. that was a real kick in the gut. they did say they were laying off nurses also. my sister used to work there in the 90's and she said they went through something similiar. she also said that they eliminated unfilled nurse positions. does anyone in the banners fellows program have any other information?

i went to the fellows info session yesterday and someone asked if those who graduated were guaranteed a job. they said they were on a hiring freeze, but that they always had more new grad positions available then they were able to fill....but then they added that if there is not a position available for someone from the fellows program, then their loan is excused. so...no straight answers there really.

I just applied for two positions at a Banner facility here in Colorado. It has been two weeks and I have not heard from a recruiter. I checked my resume status on line last night. One position has been closed and the other positions says that it is still pending. We just recently moved here from southern california. We now live in a really small town. This is the only hospital here. I just had twins boys 8 weeks ago. I had not anticipated starting back to work this early but I am afraid that I may not be able to get a job if I wait any longer. Also the local c.c. just graduated a class of 20. I am sure they have/will apply here at the hospital also. I am starting to get nervous as they dont have the specialty unit that i worked in. Its med-surg or e.r. here. Any advice?

A large hospital in Tucson, TMC, just cut loose some of their sponsored new grads and forgave their tuition contract. It does happen. TMC didn't have jobs for the new grads.

I saw a comment from a person on the AZCENTRAL story that really resonated. The person said something like, "If hospital workers are being laid off it's a recession - if nurses are being laid off, it's a depression."

I heard that some Charge Nurses are being let go but mostly Coders and ancilary staff.

Here at Maricopa we are in OK shape, Still getting OT, Construction still going on and we are pretty Busy. My best advice to all new grads is get a job as a tech or PCT in a hospital you would like to work at as a nurse so when you graduate they will be more apt to hire you.

Maybe actually it isn't such a bad thing to lose your guaranteed job but have your loan forgiven. If you are not saddled with a house you can't sell (like myself) you could relocate to an area that is still feeling the shortage with a free nursing education!

wow thats pretty depressing...

how can this be when i just read on Yahoo that healthcare was the #1 recession proof career (along with education and...energy related jobs)

i start the banner fellows program in a few weeks so hopefully by the time i graduate they will be over that whole situation...hahha..maybe? ok well lets hope so.

Just remember we are the best...imagine what the other careers are like.

I think there is a good chance of that. Believe me I know what you are feeling. My husband went back to school after losing his job for what was deemed as recession proof back then in IT as a computer programmer with a bachelors in science in IT. Well he worked a year and then IT crashed and it has never really rebounded but think that will not be true with nursing. Can't outsource that yet? I still think there is a nursing shortage but just no hiring and like others have said we are still very busy and still lots of extra shifts to be had. Just easier right now for experienced nurses than new grads but by the time you graduate I am sure things will have turned around again.
