Yup - another NCLEX inquiry from a new grad!

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hi everyone.

I am preparing to take the boards on June 20th, and I'm just wanted some advice from those who have used Kaplan's prep materials.

I am finding that despite scoring incredibly high on the ATI predictor tests, and doing very well on the Saunders review tests, I am not doing as well on Kaplan - usually scoring about 65-68%.

I'm going to be taking the Sally Lagerquist review course in San Francisco, and will keep practicing with my pharmacology cards and what not, but my Kaplan scores worry me. I've always tested very well, and am a bit concerned. I'm going to keep practicing the Kaplan questions, but to those of you who have taken the boards and used Kaplan prep materials - how do the Kaplan questions compare to the boards? How did you do with Kaplan?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, everyone

I am taking Kaplan question trainer and q bank know and I have not been scoring 65%, it has been more like 56% - 63% and I do find that they are harder questions than Saunders. I will let you know what I think about the NCLEX on June 7 if I can stand by then.

i just finished a kaplan course...some instructors were horrible!! they read straight from the the kaplan book and never gave good rationales ... just what the book said.. it was really frustrating!

i actually scored almost the same on the diagnostic and readiness exam!

i've been doing the trainer question sets and i am still in the 60% range

I found the Kaplan NCLEX Strategy book to be a good reference as to what they're trying to say. Skim through it at Barnes and check if it will be of use to you. I think that the Kaplan strategies are helpful.

I Passed!!!!!!!

Congrats, ohmygosh!!! That is excellent news!

Vector, I am in the same boat as you. I am taking my NCLEX June 21...and I took Kaplan's review course. I agree with the posters whi said Kaplan's questions are most similar to the NCLEX. I have been using Saunders to review content and Kaplan to practice answering questions (and their strategies are quite helpful, too).

I am feeling very overwhelmed at this point. I must admit, I am a bit of a perfectionist...how do I learn all this information?? Is memorizing helpful, or is there just too much to know (please say yes!)? I have read through all of Saunders and I am now trying to plan my next three weeks of studying. What should I do when I am not doing Kaplan's Q-bank and question trainers? Any thoughts would help...TIA.

perhaps i am answering this question prematurely --but here it goes...i did the kaplan review course in the classroom as well as using their online resources--i took my nclex today -- so i dont know if i passed or not --anyway with that said--i dont feel that kaplan helped me at all- the practice questions that they give you are nothing like the real nclex. in addition the so called "hot topics" i was told to expect--were virtually non-existant on my exam. now... i didnt totally depend on kaplan - i also did part one of suzanne's program. i also used my hesi and saunders cd's. hopefully my efforts will pay off! best of luck to you.

okay...so now that i have passed -i still stand by my opinion. i can say that i definitely believe kaplan was not at all useful for me personally. jmho- :nono: not that i think that it hurt me in anyway by taking it ---just that i didnt find their way to breaking down the questions to be useful for me.

Congrats on passing, ohmygosh!

Yay! What a huge relief, huh? I'm so glad for you!

ohmygosh, congrats!!! I am taking my NCLEX on Monday and am wondering if you thing the HESI helped you prepare? We did the HESI at our school this year and according to them I was in the top 3% of the nation in the beginning of our last semester. We took a test near the beginning and then one at the end of the semester; can't say I thought much about their review course they provided at our school though. Not sure what your HESI scores were, I was 1058, but still felt that I should read that Kaplan book. Completed that today, feeling better after studying for 2 days, 2 more to go, then looking forward to being done with this animal.

Thanks for any reply about the HESI course, mainly wondering how their questions compared to the real deal.
