10 yrs OF NURSING EXPERIENCE - CANT FIND A JOB

U.S.A. New York

Published

Been applying to several hospitals online... Application received status. Then no longer under consideration. What are these hospitals looking for in a new recruit?

I have like 10 yrs total full time acute Nursing experience out of state and abroad: acute care with a Masters degree.

I guess it always comes down to: WHO YOU KNOW.

Yes, who you know-and potential pay rate. If a hospital can pay new nurse recruits starting at the lower end of the hourly pay scale, then that's what they will lean towards. The reasoning: why pay a 10-year nurse 32.50 per hour when a new nurse grad will work for 26.00 per hour in the same position. Just something to consider.......

I'm on the same boat, except I have 5 years experience. My biggest disadvantage though: I only have an Associates Degree. Will be done my BSN this July! :D

And it is about WHO YOU KNOW. Even though I know some people who work in both NYP and Mount Sinai health systems as nurses or nurse practitioners, that isn't even enough. I asked them to help me, but they said they would have to know someone higher up just to help me.

Very true. In the NYP online application they ask you your preferred salary range. I put something low for the hospital but reasonable for my living. Even if I get one dollar or more an hour than my current job, I will be ok. I only make $30/hr at my current job and I have 5 years experience. So anything above that would be better!

Wow you guys. Isnt 26-30/hr kinda low for NY rate? I mean its New York. Even 32.5/hr with 5 yrs experience. I thought it would start at around 37/hr for a new grad... and above 40 if with experience. You get differential also for BSN... as well as night differential. :blackeye: If pay is 26/hr, I would suggest start working in another state where lodging is low and no state tax deductions. But if NY, the pay should be commensurate to the location... higher salary, higher deductions.

Isn't just a preference (if any) for younger or "new" nurses.

There are quite a few seasoned nurses in NYC pulling major overtime. They do their three 12's at one place then go on and do one or more 8's somewhere else. Some are doing adding another 12 though where they get the strength I don't know.. In any event the old adage about it being easier to find a job when you have one already applies.... Places can fill in staffing with experienced nurses working "part-time".

Wow, I find it difficult to understand that experience and master's degree alone won't get you a job. If you were in Florida, you'd be hired on the spot!

Where I am, which is Tampa Bay area, hospitals predominantly hire experienced RN's. We have a full assortment, ED, PCU, ICU, Cath Lab, Med/Surg, neuro, cardiac, ortho, etc.

I am on the opposite side of the spectrum - little experience and newly licensed, and I can hardly get any interviews due to the limitation. Knowing someone inside did not help me to get hired so far.

Lots of out of state nurses working down here. I am sure the wages are not as high as NY but there's no State or local tax either. So, if you are mobile, come on over!

i guess NY is oversaturated with experienced nurses. I know how it is out of state because im from out of state. :(

Just saw a post someplace else on here about NY nurse moving to South Florida. I guess that is an indication of what this is like to be upstate.

By contrast, I get lots of emails about jobs in AZ and WV that remain unfilled. It's an odd market.

Then there's a nursingjobcafe.com that has lots of leads for all states.

It is a combination of many things...

Several hospitals and nursing homes have closed in the past several years (Saint Vincent's, Long Island College Hospital, etc...) throwing hundreds of experienced nurses out of work. Added to this is the reduction of inpatient beds meaning places may need fewer nurses. Those that are working often complain of under staffing, but that is another kettle of fish.

Then you have what seems to be a glut of newly licensed graduates who unable to find work in NYC went elsewhere. With a few years experience under their belts they can and often do return to the City and find work. Then you have the fact places are still recruiting/hiring from all over the USA to find the "best" match for open positions.

I'm assuming this isn't a NYSNA hospital because that is very low for NYC. I work in Brooklyn and make about $46/hr with nearly 7 years experience. Manhattan hospitals pay even more. I have an interview with a magnate hospital next week and the recruiter told me that they will pay "significantly more than that" (in reference to my current salary).

I work in a NJ hospital. Non-union
