10 yrs OF NURSING EXPERIENCE - CANT FIND A JOB
Yes, who you know-and potential pay rate. If a hospital can pay new nurse recruits starting at the lower end of the hourly pay scale, then that's what they will lean towards. The reasoning: why pay a 10-year nurse 32.50 per hour when a new nurse grad will work for 26.00 per hour in the same position. Just something to consider.......

Questionable hourly rates for travel nurse
Thanks everyone, we found a better travel assignment in Los Angeles. The weekly pay is $905.00 taxable, stipends total $1120.00. My friend will have take home pay of around $1775.00 to $1800.00 weekly. Now I am really happy for her. You guys were right, call other agencies to get a broad choice of assignment packages-Thank You.

Questionable hourly rates for travel nurse
Hi All, oops made typing error. Here is my friends recruiter quote for Torrance CA travel assignment 12 hrs nights-med/surg: $16.50 x 24=$396.00 plus $24.75 x 12=$297.00, total weekly taxable $693.00. Housing stipend is $574.00 nontaxable plus MIE=$350.00. So her weekly gross pay is $1617.00 and take home would be $1450.00 weekly. From this she would pay for her own housing and rental car. Also, the recruiter wrote she would receive $500.00 travel reimbursement non taxable, and $200.00 reimb for licensure, certs, CEU's. Is this a low paying package?

Questionable hourly rates for travel nurse
Hi All, so, my girlfriend has traveled before, and this would be her 3rd or 4th assignment. She said she hasn't traveled in about 4 years and is so anxious to go-anywhere. I told her I still think $16.50 per hour with $1000.00 weekly stipends is too low, for Torrance CA. She and I are looking into other assignments that pay better than that. I personally think she can do better than $650.00 taxable per week.

Questionable hourly rates for travel nurse
Hi Guys, okay, so a friend texted me stating she received an offer for a travel assignment in Torrance CA. I was excited for her until she stated the recruiter quoted her $16.50 per hour and stipends that total about $1050.00 per week. I told her do not let recruiter submit you, as that is way too low for an RN with 8 years experience. I rained on her parade, but I am concerned she is being taken advantage of. What are some insights, suggestions or comments, as I feel sort of guilty now. Thanks in advance.

Problem with a problem-co worker
Hi vbarger28, you have done great in taking this medical assistant under your wing. Its time to let her fly on her own. In general, that environment of Filipino nurses you described, are unfortunately a nightmare for anyone who is not Filipino. I am always amazed at how they try to dominate the field of nursing-and are not always the best suited individuals to be nurses. Stick to your guns and remain strong in that environment. The medical assistant will soon realize that the Filipino nurses will never be impressed with her skills/ability, and will continue to sabotage anything she does-that's how Filipino nurses operate(in packs).

African American patients - a cultural question
Hi O.adamantite, maybe its how you present yourself, or initiate communication that is the culprit for the behaviors that you describe.

Why do RN's avoid LTC positions?
Hello All, in response to the OP's question, RN's avoid LTC for a variety of reasons, judging by the responses given. Prioritizing and organization are two of the greatest strengths needed in working in long term care today. I have worked in many roles in LTC: CNA, RN floor nurse, and RN evening supervisor. Is it a lot of work? Yes, but knowing what your priorities are, and how to go about accomplishing them will definitely guide you in providing nursing care. Working with elderly, chronically ill patients and their family members requires a certain patience, compassion and commitment in dealing with their issues on a daily basis. As a floor nurse, you can only do the best you can with what you have to work with, in relation to staffing shortages/supplies. LTC is not for everyone, as stated in many of the responses here.

Napa CA Queen of the Valley
Thanks everyone for your posted information. I am still not sure if I will go to the Napa hospital yet, but your insights will be considered in my decision. I am familiar with Meditech, and know it is tedious. And Merner1012, thanks for the info of the merger with Providence, I did not know that. This probably will create a certain tension among nursing staff. Thanks guy, you are all helpful-appreciate it!!!

hi travelers, I am considering a contract at queen of the valley-napa California and have a few questions: what computer charting EMR do they use? do they float travelers a lot, or cancel travelers a lot? thanks for any input.
