To Whom this May Concerns:
Since the beginning of my nursing education, and now into my nursing practice, my aim is to be a nurse who can provide the best quality of care at a high level of intensity and skill. I believe that the philosophy of St.Joseph's Medical Center would not only align with my own, but would challenge me to continue to strive for excellence in my nursing craft. Improving the quality of life of my clients is my passion. I am motivated through generating results and using evidence based research to improve my knowledge as a nurse.
In my present role as RN supervisor, I coordinate and direct care to individual and families using a holistic approach. I collaborate with a group of 20 nursing staff and other members of the healthcare team to care for chronic and acutely ill patients. Most of the time I provide leadership and support for staff and patients, but I also provide direct patient care on a regular basis. This position enables me to have experience in caring for a diverse number of patients with multiple diagnosis & treatments, including those with COPD, infections, amputations, and other medical conditions. In this fast paced environment, I am constantly refining my clinical judgment, reviewing patient specific disease processes, and self-reflecting on my level of care to consistently provide excellent patient care.
While my current position is not considered acute care, I consistently strive to grow as a better nurse, as evident by my certifications in ALCS, PALS, NIHSS, and EKG monitoring. I am also actively pursuing the NRP and TNCC certifications. I am experienced with IV's, wound care, CVCs, PICC lines, interdisplinary team collaboration, and developing plan of care. I am confident my evolving clinical skills, collaborative readiness, and positive receptiveness to feedback would be a great asset to the nursing team and department. My certifications, education and experience will enhance your organization.
I believe that I would be a great addition to the St. Joseph's and Dignity Health team. I would be grateful for an opportunity to meet with you and discuss further about my application and qualifications for this position.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration
I honestly think my cover letter is too busy, but I don't know how to cut it down. I've read so many different ones and try to mirror mine after theirs. I'd appreciate any help. Thank you!

I like to bullet my cover letters. It helps get the info across in a less overwhelming way and is easier (and faster) to read for the nurse recruiter.

elizabeast7 Is right on when she says to bullet point. I would also advise you to remove the expiration dates and your CA license number. When you hire, then you pull out the paper work, and as for your license, that is why many states went paperless 1. License's could easily be stolen and 2. To put the responsibility on the employer, to look you up,and assure that they are hiring a licensed nurse. You have BLS, ACLS, and PALS, just simplify.
NIHSS is a certificate, not a certification.
You have both a BS and a BSN, but you listed only one school... I put my education first

I want to start by saying that you have a lot of great experience and seem like a very competent and ambitious person. So my comments are meant to be just an opinion of an outside reader that can give you a different angle. Also, I would say don't get impatient. The electronic application systems can be very slow. It took 3 months to hear from my current employer, and my director apologized profusely and was so embarrassed at how slowly the process goes. So, your resume may have nothing to do with it. I do think the cover letter could be a lot shorter, people just don't have the attention spans these days.
Anyway, see my comments below.
Good luck!
I would put this part about license and certification after you list past employment. Everyone applying for a RN position should have a license. Then move your highlight section to the top, but maybe call it a summary. Eg, Registered nurse with several years of experience in diverse environments, fluent in xxxx and competent in [insert computer programs here]. That is what makes you stand out and will tell them if you can fill a niche they have.
Separate the honors from the education and make it its own subhead: honors and awards or organizations etc. and put that info under there.
I don't know if this is the exact letter you use but there are some errors. In your cover letter there is a typo: ACLS is transposed, I know it's petty but some take that into account. There shouldn't be an apostrophe in IVs, maybe take out what is redundant on the resume piece so it's less busy. Also, some may question why are you getting NRP which is usually for NICU nurses and TNCC which is usually taken by ED nurses. It could look like you're not focused. I have underlined other area that contain grammar or spelling issues.
