compassionresearcher has 20 years experience and specializes in Pediatrics, Women's Health, Education.

My specialties have included pediatrics, women's health, education, diabetes self-management, research, and writing. I am passionate about creating a healthy work environment for all, but specifically for nurses. People spend more time at work than they do with their families, we need to keep them safe and happy. I'm a plant eater and animal lover. I enjoy travel, arts, theater, and humor.

  14. If it's a personality conflict between the nurse giving report and the patient/family I prefer not to know. It makes me anxious going in and sets up a biased attitude. I prefer going in as a blank slate, unless there is a very serious, documentable issue that I need to know about.

DM1 in Elementary Setting - Dealing with Parents

The endocrinologist at my hospital uses the basal bolus method. The families are instructed to cover for the planned amount of carbs using a formula of units:grams of carbs. We tell the patients yes you can eat whatever you want, outside of concentrated sugar, as long as you cover for it ahead of time. But for other health purposes you want to keep splurges to minimum, just like people who don't have diabetes.
