The 3-11 ones are nice and very helpful. The 7-3 one tells you exactly what she will and will not do. I've come across a lot of those in my time. But I work 7p to 7a so I only cross paths the the 7a secretary breifly and I never ask her for anything. :)

I was just curious. We have several and they are all really good but all very different. My unit is split between two floors. We used to have ICU (Intensive Care Unit) & ACU (Acute Coronary Unit) but we combined the two because basically docs would not separate which was which. All of the CCU nurses work either floor it's just based upon daily assignments.
I was at work yesterday and I joke around with my day shift US all the time she is 70 and has been there for about 30 years and she is very good but she does it her way for sure. She calls most of the docs by first names and always jokes around with them. I was giving her a hard time about learning to use the computer and new programs and I wrote this question while she was watching me. I told her when come back we will look at it and see How many secretaries give nurses grief, she thought this was hilarious.

OMG !!! :chuckle We have a 7A-7P unit secretary that is like perfect !! We have a weekend unit secretary from 7A-7P she is somewhat bossy but hey she gets the job done and helps watch all of our backs. I love both of these unit secretaries. However.....We have a 3P-11P unit secretary that is the secretary from hell. OMG !! At 5:30P when I am most busy at the desk, she stands up and says "well I'm going to dinner" !! :angryfire I've got all the docs coming over from their offices. There are usually 10-20 charts in the rack and don't think she would make sure they are scanned before she goes to stuff her face. I'm trying to make out the assignment for the next shift. The families are all either showing up or calling after their work day. The ER decides to call for beds on patients they've had for many hours, they always seem to call between 5:30-6:00 . Then she comes back and doesn't answer the call light. She says "well I can't take care of the problem anyway" we have beepers, pleeeaaassee answer the call lights and page the nurse. Half the time she ignores the phone ringing! I'm like "THE PHONE IS RINGING" !! All of the charge nurses have complained about her. She has been spoken to time and again. It's beyond me why she is still there. Thanks for asking and thanks for letting me vent !!!!!

The very best unit secretary I ever worked with (over 30 years ago) was the former head nurse of the unit I worked on. How weird is that? She had developed a chronic illness and was unable to function as an RN, but could sit at the desk. The really great thing was that she avoided throwing her weight around and was happy to serve as a resource to the staff. She was amazing.
