Hello, I am doing a survey about RN's opinion on "lifelong learning in nursing" for a project of BSN program. I would truly appreciate if you would like to share your opinion about the following questions.
1. Are nursing professionals lifelong learners?
2. Are you a lifelong learner?
3. Is lifelong learning part of a nursing profession?
4. How does the scope of practice, ethics, and values play a role in lifelong learning in nursing?
5. Whose responsibility is lifelong learning in nursing?
6. What does lifelong learning do for your self-esteem, your knowledge-base, your
quality of care, and your patient's safety?
Thanks in advance :)

4 My scope of practice is defined by my BON but I need to know my job/role/function to the best of my ability and the way to do that is to be able to think critically and apply sound judgment and decison making skills to every choice choice I make. That comes with experiance and building my knowledge base. I need to be informed about the ramifications of my decisions so that I practice ethicaly and safely
5 Both the nurse and her employer
6 Lifelong learning makes me a a better nurse. It allows me to be able to share and teach what I know. Thus it follows that I will be a safe practioner, open to new ways of thinking, able to function with different value sets/cultures, all while meeting my patients needs. That gives me a great feeling and thus builds my self esteem.
nhnursie, thanks a lot for your reply. Very helpful...

4) I work in MD...continuing education is NOT required to keep/renew license...but DC has it to keep license...i believe if more states had CEU's requirements to renew license...it would hel nursing knowledge
5)I think a nurse is resonsible....but the state should make it mandatory so that it is part of license renewal
6)Life-long learning improves patient care....gives u access to new results...treatments and helps you becomea better advocate for pts by being more knowledgable.

1,2,3 are a yes.. Especially 3 because whether you a lvn or rn, have a bsn or masters the medical field is always advancing and everyone is learning.4. Scope of practice is what you are allowed to do as a nurse, I am an lvn and I've heard of other lvns doing things within the scope of practice of an rn because they've been at such and such hospital for this long and that is unethical. One of my main values as a lifelong learner is I'm an lvn bridging to rn, I will take my courses, learn my new scope of practice, and after passing nclexrn then I can have an Rns scope of practice.. Just because I work with Rns and we do a lot of the somethings doesn't mean I can do the things they we're trained for and I wasn't.5.lifelong nursing is the nurses responsibility and the employer. With all the medical advances and changes we should be educating ourselves to provide the proper care for our patients, employers also need to have up to date in services, classes, training etc.6. Life long nursing makes me an over all better nurse, I crave to learn. If I don't know about a certain Med or diagnosis I look it up the second I get home.. So next time I encounter I am prepare which benefits my patient care abilities, their safety because I know what I am treating, my self esteem because it's one more thing I've added to my knowledge base.
Wow lots of grammatical errors.. I blame my long exhausting shift lol, but you get the point!

1) Are nursing professionals lifelong learners?
It varies from nurse to nurse.
2) Are you a lifelong learner?
Yes. I am working towards a certification, & I've completed over 100 CNEs in the past 4 years, & I have an MS.
3) Is lifelong learning part of a nursing profession?
It should be. I believe all state boards of nursing should incorporate CNE as part of their requirement for licensure renewal.
4) How does the scope of practice, ethics, and values play a role in lifelong learning in nursing?
It is in the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses that professional growth requires commitment to lifelong learning through continuing education, self-study, and pursuit of certification/advance degrees, etc. Knowledge of relevant, current scope of practice is mentioned as a necessity. Knowing your scope of practice and having the knowledge/skills/abilities to operate within that scope is an ethical responsibility!
5) Whose responsibility is lifelong learning in nursing?
The nurse! It is helpful when employers and organizations assist with this process, but the individual nurse is ultimately responsible for providing competent, high-quality care and seeking out training when gaps in knowledge, skills, or abilities are identified.
6)What does lifelong learning do for your self-esteem, your knowledge-base, your
All benefit and are improved upon from lifelong learning.

Yes, we have to be because the health care field is always changing and we need to adapt or move on:)
Yes, I continue to take nursing courses/workshops/seminars/inservices etc, not just as required by my licence registration but for my own benefit.
I believe is has to be because in order to keep our nursing portfolios current, we have to continue learning.
My scope of practice is define by the CNO, my employer and myself. However, that being said, I like to specialize in order to continue to expand on my scope of practice.
I personally believe it starts with each of us, however not all nurses are for it and therefore the responsibility shifts to our employers/BONs/associations/etc.
All benefit from lifelong learning. Your knowledge base improves, which keeps you current and valued as a nurse. You continue to be confident in your skills, and expanding your skill set. Your quality of care becomes higher based on the evidence behind your learning. Patient safety benefits as we continue to research and grow.
I truly appreciate all your kind reply. They are verey very helpful information for my paper :)

Yes, lifelong learning is essential. In fact, where I live, nurses have mandatory learning plans, reported at registration. We cannot renew our license unless certain requirements have been met.

Life long learning is vital for all nurses if they want to keep abreast with changing and challenging enviroment.Nurses should always be learners so that patients will recieve quality and safe care. Nurses roles are guided by ANA code of ethics and state laws.
