I'm a wee freshman and decided to switch to nursing.
Any other like 25 and under who recently decided to switch from something? I was originally pre-med/biology.
What made you change your mind?
Me - I wasn't 100% confident in medicine but I know I am in nursing, I can always go back.
Are you doing ASN or BSN?
ASN @ Charity SON.
Are you going to pursue BSN, why? Master's?
Yes, it's a large trend in NOLA and I am interested in CRNA. I'm doing ASN first so I can get out and starting working!
Why not medicine?
Nursing seems to fit my bill better, I would love to be in peds! I could see myself a physician but at this point in time in my life, I just couldn't do it. Still trying to rebuild from Katrina, I can't afford the financial agony. Not that I am making nursing out to be easier, but it's 3 years vs like 10 for med.
You tell me about you!

I'm 21, and recently decided to return back to nursing last year as a major even though I started out my freshman year in a BSN program. I then thought I would do better in Fashion Merchandising. I worked as a Visual Merchandiser at a popular retail store, yet all the petty and dramatic stress that went on was something I could not see myself doing for the rest of my life, it just was not worth it. Granted once I get my nursing degree I will be shopping there, but as far as being behind the counter, not a chance! lol But I'm back into nursing and currently looking to be in an ADN program this fall. I also plan on getting my BSN and finally my CRNA. I'm looking to complete all of this in about 5 1/2 years.

I am 25 and just about to apply for programs in the fall (once I complete micro in the summer)
I got into nursing for a combination of:
- I have very good people skills
- wanted to be able to work 3 days a week and still make good money
- wanted a recession proof job that could make 100k if I needed to so I can take care of my parents with no retirement
I really cannot wait for the drama of nursing school... people always seem to get stressed out in prereq classes but I try to tell them that this is the easy part! Imagine when you have to clean up poo

You dont want to even think about the drama/stress that comes with nursing! And I will end it there.
To the poster above me, yeah money isnt everything. I dont think nurses get paid enough to endure the stress they endure. Its good youre thinking about your family, and working 3 days is definitely a plus. If youre doing it for anything, its for YOU and its something YOU want. I'll tell you right now, I work with a nurse who is doing it for the salary and shes looking into her 3rd career (accounting didnt work out for her either) because shes tired of dealing with the b.s.

I just got a biology degree, and recently decided to veer off of the pathway to medical school as well! I'm applying to a couple of accelerated programs (BSN/MSN)...nursing seems to fit me better too.
I was dead set on the MD route for awhile, and then realized that I want time to start a family, work off some debt (lovely 100K from undergrad), and I like the patient interaction better in nursing from what I've seen shadowing (sometimes it seems like the doctor is too busy diagnosing, in some settings). I'm so excited to apply/start, and I feel like this huuuge weight has been lifted off of me-- and that I'm NOT going to dread the next 7 years of my life like I would in med school

I just turned 24 this week. I have a BS in Psychology and want to enter one of the entry level MSN programs in my area. I'm taking microbiology this summer and a few classes this fall, then applying. I'm very interested in mental health nursing. I think this is a good path to combine my interest in medicine and mental health with out becoming a therapist or a psychiatrist. :wink2:

I'm 25 as well, and I will be applying to Nursing school this summer. I finished most of my GE's for a bachelors a few years ago, but because I had no focused goal, I never finished my degree, and worked full time. Seeing the real world firsthand thru my young eyes, I realized that I need stability. With the economy heading in the direction it's going, I decided that going to school and finishing up my degree would be the best decision.
I never thought about medicine, although when I decided to come back to school--the thought did occur to me. But the amount of student loan debt and the amount of schooling it takes were huge turn-offs. My goal now is to get into a graduate program after a couple years working on the floor. I have really good grades so there shouldn't be a problem getting into an advanced nurse practice program, either CRNA, nurse practitioner, etc. So far I haven't made my mind up completely yet about which graduate program, all I know is that I'll be there. :)
