You know you work nights when.......

Published

The conversation with coworkers each night starts with "I got x amount of sleep today..."

the night seems perfectly quiet(ZZZzzzZZZ)I cant help but bang my head... then suddenly I heard the voice of our C.I.(shouting! very mad!)I quickly fixed myself... oh, it was just an illusion!we should never let our serotonin control us.

When the hospital can call you at 1pm to ask you if you can come in to help out days but when night shift is drowning they aren't allowed to call anyone from days until 7am:confused:

You guys all sound like vampires!!!! Uh, no offense...

Is it customary for new nurses to be put on nights and weekends so senior nurses can work days, or do you get to select your preference?

Occassionally you feel a bit like a vampire when people start bleeding in the middle of the night or when you have to do fingersticks or blood draws.

That sounds soooo familiar.:jester:

.....you come out of pt's room to (i.e. look at the chart to see when was the last time this pt was give Gravol)... and you forget why you came out of the room in the first place. In order to remember why, you have to mentally reatrace everything that happened while you were in the room.

....when sight of the pillow is stronger than any amount of caffeine you've ingested.

I've been working nights for 15 yrs. I can relate to every story. Funny how after so long you just accept these things as normal!

when the kindergarten teacher asked for examples of nocturnal animals, your son proudly exclaims, "my mom".

[color=gray]lol. when my daughter was in grade one, she had to prepare a journal book about her family. she drew pictures of each of us. her father was working. her brother was playing with toys and her mother was in bed sleeping.

There is more competition for day shift positions, but my unit just hired a bunch of new nurses, GNs and RNs, and several of them got days. A lot of us simply prefer the dark side. For me, days might work better in terms of having a life--assuming I could get used to getting up at 0530. It's a drag sleeping away a fair chunk of daylight on my days off. But the mood is just so much nicer on nights. Tend to work with mostly the same people most of the time, so we know what to expect of each other. Or maybe we're just too sleepy to bicker. Hugging isn't at all uncommon, and I think a lot of the day shifters would fall over if they saw that sort of thing.

OK, I'm loving this thread! Great stories that I can truley relate to. I put up my hurricanne shutters early this summer when I was out of town, I have deceided that I Like it that way! No light, I'm in a tomb! Wonder how long I can leave them up? Im like a Gremiln, "Bright Lights"! Do Ya remenber that movie??

As you will notice by the time of this post, I too am a "night nurse." Dun dun dun. Some of these responses literally had me in stitches. I would like to add that I had bacon and eggs for dinner... er... breakfast tonight before coming into work.

you can no longer sleep in a completly dark room and you sort of get used to surviving on 4hrs sleep a day
