York University 2nd Entry Nursing 2014

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi everyone!

Interested to know who else will be applying for the 2nd entry program at York U for Fall 2014!

Exemptions are awarded automatically so you don't have to worry about applying for them or anything. At your enrolment appointment an advisor will tell you which classes you've been exempt from.

For the elective courses we get to pick 2 3rd or 4th year NURS classes (some examples: Transcultural Nursing, Patterns in the Health Experience of Older Persons, Child Rights and Child/Youth Centredness in Canadian Nursing) it's not like other programs where electives can be outside the major. We can't receive transfer credit for any of the NURS courses so it doesn't seem we can be exempt from those.

Does anyone know if we have to pay a deposit?

You have to pay a deposit of $300 by the 15th of the month after you enrol in your classes.

E.g. if you enrol in May, the deposit is due June 15th.

Thanks for the reply!

So we enroll in our classes online during our enrollment appointment, right?

I'm an internal applicant and when I was first accepted to York my enrolment appointment was in-person so I'm not sure how it differs online. But yes, you enrol in classes during the appointment. And after your appointment you can continue to make changes to your timetable without penalty until the first day of classes (after that there's a drop fee).

Also tuition for Fall and full-year classes are due Sept. 10 and for Winter classes January 10.

I thought I posted this but I guess I didn't.

Does anyone know what the exact amount of tuition is for each semester? From what I have found on the website I'm figuring it's the 689.55 for every 3.0 credits and 28.53 per credit? Does anyone know for sure? And if you're exempt do you pay a fee for the PLAR or do you only pay for the courses you're taking? So if I am exempt from biochem would my tuition be 3875.70 for the first semester plus any course-specific fees - I noticed that some have an additional lab fee.

For domestic students tuition is $229.85 per credit (the supplementary fee of $28.53 is included in this). You only pay for the classes you're taking (there's no flat-rate), and course-specific fees are additional.

We take 18 credits in first semester so that's $4137.3 + additional course fees and for students exempt from biochem it's $3447.75 for the 15 credits + additional course fees. You'll know for sure what the price is as the cost for each class automatically appears in your transactions as soon as you enrol.

There's also a health/dental fee of about $240 (total) that's automatically added to your account in September or October. You can opt out of it if you don't want the plan.

Also in case anyone is wondering, the program is designed to be completed in 2 years but you actually have up to 4 years to complete it if you feel you need to take a lighter course load, or need to repeat a class or something.

If you google "York nursing academic calendar" you can find the program's policies on leaves of absences, what happens if you miss a clinical, etc. It was the second link for me.

Thank you very much for this post - it is actually very useful! I wondered before whether or not students had to complete this program in the 2 years that this program runs or if they had more time! It's great that it offers us so much time especially considering that you never know what life may bring and it's calming to know that students can take a leave of absence for things such as illnesses, pregnancy, etc. It would really be unfortunate to be accepted and then have to drop and go through this horrid process of waiting once again.

Has anyone signed up for CPR training yet? Or requested a police check? I'm not sure when's the best time to get the ball rolling on these things. When are you all planning on getting your vaccines and immunizations/TB skin test?

I got admitted into the program this morning. It was updated on Myfile but I didn't get any email. For those who are wondering, I am currently in the health studies program at York and will graduate after the summer semester. I have all the prerequisites completed and my cgpa is 6.46 and last 30 @ 7.4.

Are those things (CPR, immunizations, backcheck) required before the start of the program or before the start of any clinical (which from what I understand is about 6 weeks in?).

I haven't actually received my package in the mail yet but I'm assuming the information may be contained in there so if anyone has this can you please let us know :)

I've received my offer in the mail and it wasn't in there. Maybe you're right in that they explain it to us at the start since clinical doesn't start until 6 weeks in...but I think we'd have to at least do the police check before the start date since that can potentially take longer than 6 weeks to receive, right?

Here is the link to where I saw this stuff mentioned on York's website: Welcome to the 2nd Entry BScN program! | School of Nursing
