33 years old and starting over

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So Hello! If anyone bothers to read this...

I am 32 (well 33 in Feb 09) and I am starting school Jan 12th. I have some pre-req courses to take before I can enter the Nursing program in the fall.

Can I tell you how scary the COMPASS Algebra looks after not being in school for 15 years. YIKES! At any rate, I am extremely excited about getting started with my pre-reqs in Jan and look forward to being an RN. I have three younger sisters that are all nurses. MSN, BSN and ADN. ADN is working on her BSN. So here I go tagging along. Aren't older sisters supposed to lead.

I am planning to keep working for the first two semesters. I am an area manager for Coca Cola. I am hoping to complete my MATH 110, PSY 201 and ENG 101 online and just have my BIO 110 to take at the school.

Does anyone out there have any advice? Specifically anyone with a situation similar to mine... 33 leaving a corporate management career to go into nursing.

ANY and ALL advice welcome. BE honest, but positive - ya know it's scary enough already!

PS- I'm in Florence, SC. Please let me know if you are from the same area. I am going to be going to FDTC.

Good for you for going back to school. I myself will be 33 in the beginning of January. I went back to school 2 years ago and have only been going part time. This next semester I should finish up the prereqs so I can finally apply for the nursing program. I agree with a previous post. DO NOT GIVE UP OR LOSE FAITH! You can really do this. Just be sure to do the work and study hard. I have enjoyed every bit of school. One of my first classes was the math classes and I am horrible at math but I aced all of the math so far. So can you. If you are struggling with something do not be afraid to ask for help from the teacher or peers. Good luck to you. You will love it. God bless.

I, too, am starting over at 42! I just finished my first BIO class and got an 'A'. I feel like it has given me the confidence to go on. It is scary going back at first....but less so when you prove to yourself you CAN do it. As far as the age thing goes, you have to get over it, because you can't change how old you are. I think that when you are an "adult learner" you really appreciate what you are learning. Afterall, we are studying about this miraculous thing called 'life' in our A&P classes. It is an amazing journey to reconnect with education at a later point in life. The life experience and age that you carry into the nursing profession will be a big asset. If I was in a hospital bed, I would appreciate someone with a little grey in their hair, some life experience, and a lot of enthusiam for what they are doing because they chose to be there by my side at that mature point in their life.

I am also returning to school for nursing. I have just completed my first 3 of 5 prerequisites for the traditional program. I understand exactly how you feel. I was really intimidated at first, until I realized that I am just as smart and capable as the other students are. Also, give yourself a fighting chance. The prerequisites are challenging and if you want to get into nursing school, you have to do well. This last semester I took 3 classes, (sociology, psychology and finite math), and was on campus every day. I also knew that this was my purpose. I volunteer at a local hospital and I can feel it when I walk in the door. Good luck and I will keep all of you in my prayers

Its never too late!! Dont give up and keeping striving to reach your goal to become a Nurse!!!

Dont overload yourself, strive for an A in all your courses and take it one by one if need be.

Dont get into a habit of withdrawing+retaking classes

Keep all of your textbooks+notes from your prerequisite courses. And try to purchase used textbooks online bc sometimes theyre cheaper.

Develop a relationship with your professor bc if you get an A or B at the end of the semester they will be happy to write you a letter of recommendation! Its better for you to ask as soon as the semester is over bc they may forget your face later down the line.

Plan for the future! Since you already have a job perhaps you could volunteer between semesters at a hospital. Also research prospective nursing programs and find out EARLY what they are looking for!

Finally, stay focused! At times you'll want to quit or think it takes a decade to finish! Trust me a myriad of us has been there!

GOOD LUCK!
