35 years old with 3 kids and thinking about nursing

Published

I really would love to get into nursing but I am concerned it may be too difficult for me. Is there anyone else in the same boat that is older and has kids and is thinking of becoming a nurse? I am absolutely terrified of the prerequisits and biology and chemistry are not stong points for me.

I'm 35 with 3 kids as well. I've wanted to do it forever! There will always be 15 million reasons why we shouldn't do it, or why now is not the right time. But I'm jumping in and doing it. It feels good knowing I'm not the only one who is over committed and stressed out. :)

Mid-thirties with two kids checking in. As everyone else has pointed out there are lots of us out there.

If you are interested in finding out if nursing is for you and if you can handle the coursework then just sign up for a prereq class or two at your local community college. The cost will be very low and you'll discover a bit more about what you like.

I'm 40 and have three children, am just now doing my prerequisites. My husband is military and deploying in the fall. My biggest worry is what I will do if one of the kids gets sick, since I don't have that much backup... (and who will take your sick children? not like you can send them to a sitter when sick).

I keep plugging away though.

I am 32 with 4 children ages 3-13 and am about to start the nursing program and boy am I worried already. I know that I have support from my familly and this will also show my kids that hard work and alot of effort pays off... Good luck to you! Do it now so you have no regrets later :)

Cookes.....my hubby is military too and we have no family here so I was concerned about what to do if my kids get sick. Sittercity is free for military and I noticed there is quite a few sitters who offer to do last moment sick care for kidsLouise

I'm 33 with kids, my daughter is 9, my son is 2, and step-daughter is 9 (lives with us full time). If you want this, you can do it! I was scared to death to go back to school, the science (bio and chem) really scared me but I passed with flying colors. I made it through A & P 1 and 2 and microbiology and will be starting nursing school in August. YOU CAN IT!!! Best of luck to you :o

I found the science classes incredibly interesting. To me, there is nothing more satisfying than knowing how and why the body works in the way that it does. The classes can be challenging, I'm not gonna lie. But, if you are truly interested in becoming a nurse, you'll truly want to know and understand the material thats given. For me, that wasn't hard because I honestly did enjoy my pre-reqs. I guess, the best advice I can give you is to try and turn that terrified feeling into an inquisitive one. Because, the more you know in these classes the better it will be. Instead of being afraid of it, approach them from another angle. The classes are only as hard as you make them out to be.

As for kid, well, I don't have any. So, I'm sorry I can't help you there but I'm sure others here have more experience with that. And, I too, am an older student who is 38 and attending nursing school this Fall.

Best wishes to you. :)

I am a 34 yr old mother of 3. Im hopefully starting this August. Im scared to death! I dropped out in 9th grade, married their father and became a housewife. But after 2 divorces later and a few dead end jobs, I decided to take the plunge! My kids deserve a better life than what I have given them. I know its gonna be hard, and I will wanna give up but I have to keep in my mind and my heart that this is for them and for me.

I wanna say good luck and don't ever give up!

I am 40, have 3 children, and await the final decision to my application into an LPN Program at Daytona State College. I too, struggled with wondering if it was the right time, or with my own self doubt. After taking the Pre-Req's, that all changed.

I think that once you've taken the Pre-Req's, you might have a better idea of what the studying and scheduling will be like.

Good Luck!

I have the same problem with the sick kids, no family here that are prepared to help with the kids. I've made a few friends here on post. I'm lucky my son is now in high school and prepared to help out with the two younger ones. When my husband deployed I found it easier to study, more so to keep my mind busy while he was away.

I do not have any small children but I am 47 years old. One thing that I always wanted to do was be a nurse. When I should have gone to college it was not important. When it became important I had a small child and no money. Now my child is grown, she has a college degree and in the military. It is just me and my husband at home. I work as a CNA and I am working on my prerequisites (almost done) and I am hoping to be accepted into the nursing program for January 2013. I figured that at this age for me, it is now or never. It is going to be NOW.
