YALE GEPN 2022

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi everyone! Wanted to start this conversation for those who are getting ready to apply once the application opens on June 1st 2021.

I am hoping we can all share information, ask questions, and support each other throughout the exciting journey ahead!

Love the feedback in here! I'm applying to WHNP with the goal to be an abortion provider in a state where NPs can do that. I worked in the reproductive rights nonprofit sphere for almost a decade, used to do clinic escorting at abortion clinics, and have experience as a birth doula, CNA, COVID vaccine volunteer, was a part of a political organization outside of work, and am now working customer support at a repro health start up. I graduated college in 2014 in Human Development and Family Studies and finishing my prereqs, I had a 3.9 in undergrad and a 4.0 in prereqs. Feeling confident that I'm a great fit for this program but nervous because Yale and the potential competition for the cohort. Guess we'll see how it pans out!

Good morning, just a quick question around The statement of interest. I know that everything has to be answered but does it have to go in order or as long as everything is in there it’s OK?

Good morning, I think it should be fine to answer out of order since you will be addressing all the questions.

Specializes in Psychiatry.

Anyone have any statistics for the applications/acceptances for this program?  I just did an info-session last week and they didn't have any stats to give out at the moment.  I am applying for the 2022 pmhnp gepn track.

My undergrad GPA is ~3.15 across my two schools (community college + University of Oregon, psych BS).  I am a bit nervous about my GPA as most of my poor grades are in my hard sciences.  I don't really have a good explanation for this other than the fact that I am just not interested in bio/A&P/chem, I simply put enough attention towards those courses to receive a passing grade and chose to prioritize my attention towards psych/philosophy/humanities as those are where my genuine interests lie.

Throughout my time at uni I was able to get ~500 hours in a research/practice environment, as well as some teaching experience (25 hours?) lecturing undergraduate intro psych discussion courses.  After graduating, I worked as a behavior specialist and collected ~1000 hours of clinical experience working 1:1 or 1:2 with a wide variety of clients (aged 3-21).  For financial reasons, I had to leave the field and get a better paying job in sales, which I've found success in, but I really would like to return to the field as that is where I belong.

I have 3 strong letters (1 academic, 1 supervisor in the field, and my current boss), but am worried about how to properly elaborate on my experiences in the essays.  I want to go into the field due to my own experiences within mental health (plagued since an early teen, spent two weeks in an inpatient setting at 16).  Aside from that, I genuinely love the field as a whole.  I spend the majority of my time attempting to analyze myself and to find meaning in life, and love to do the same for others.

Sorry, this post is kind of chaotic and unorganized.  Any tips for my essays?

edit: also, I finished my BS at 19, should I speak about that?

About admissions stats: I think most of the DE programs have an acceptance rate between 10-30%. I would bank on a range in there, or more competitive because Yale.

It sounds like you have a great story to tell, I would focus on your amazing clinical experience and why a transition into being an NP makes sense for what kind of work you want to do. I think speaking to wanting to transition out of sales and back into mental health work makes sense. Graduating at 19 is impressive but doesn't say much about your capacity to become a great NP one day, but your years as a behavioral therapist will! Just my feedback after writing way too many of these ?  best of luck! The fact that you're posting and seeking more information already says a lot about you as a candidate.

Just submitted my application! Very nervous and excited. I am a little nervous about my LORs- especially since I graduated college in 2014, but have been doing prereqs at my local cc online. One of my LOR is a national director at my last job, one is another national director at a big political organization I was a part of, and another is a professor from undergrad who I did research with. I didn't get any clinical or science LORs since I struggled to build relationships (because online and pandemic) but I did have good clinical experiences, and a 4.0 science GPA. Guess we'll see how it pans out.

Hi all, just wondering if anyone did a one on one meeting with admissions? Is it an opportunity to ask questions regarding aspects of the application, etc? I’m just trying to figure out what to expect to expect. TIA

Hey I actually did a one on one meeting. I met with (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) and she allowed me to ask any questions I had about the application process. It was very helpful!

Turned in all my applications this week and feeling excited! What other schools is everyone applying to? I am applying to Northeastern, John Hopkins, Case Western, and Ohio State as well as Yale but have not seen a thread for those other schools yet.
